Ok, so let’s get one thing straight. I’m not a PS3 fan boy, nor am I an employee or in any way affiliated with Sony. I love my Xbox 360, and if I had to choose between it and my PS3 it would be a tough call.
In the past I will admit that my heart was in the green and white corner. But like most people who prefer the Xbox 360, I did not own a PS3.
Now, I’m not here to say which is better. I don’t need to because I have both, and I like both*. So anyone about to write anything along the lines of “WTF?! OMGz epic FANboi FAIL noobzor FTL?!”, shut your cake-hole for two minutes and hear me out.
The thing is, both consoles are awesome. That can happen; two competing devices can both be very good. When we argue the strengths and weaknesses of a console, we would do well not to base the argument on a negative tirade directed at the competition. So, on that note…
Count them, five reasons why this year is a good year to get a PS3.
1. Killzone II. Ok, if you haven’t heard of this one yet, then please, come speak to me after class. It’s pretty much the most hyped PS3 exclusive ever, and if early reviews are anything to go by, it is going to be incredible. This year the PS3 gets a healthy injection of exclusive content including God of War III, Heavy Rain, LA Noire, Quantum Theory, Uncharted 2, Infamous and more.
2. Price cuts. Ok so while nothing is confirmed, it at least stands to reason that there is a decent
chance that Sony will cut their pricing this year. Previously, Sony has been losing $290 on every PS3 sold. With production costs now down to just $50 above the current retail price, Sony does have some room to cut prices. Leading financial analysts are predicting a price cut, and hey, if they see reason to speculate then who am I to disagree. If the PS3 can hit the magical R3700 mark, then we are in for a show.
3. Local Xbox 360 price increase. Ok, so I know I said it’s naughty to promote your favorite console by berating the competition and all that. But the point is, the market is shifting, and if the PS3 does in fact come down in relation to the Xbox 360, the game will change and the PS3’s value proposition will increase.
4. HD and Blu-ray. Today I saw a 46” Full HD (1920×1080) TV going for R13999, brand new. Ok, so it was a Wharfedale, but still. Prices are coming down and will continue to do so. Full HD TVs are going to become more standardized over the next year, and at some point “HD ready” will be a thing of the past. When that day arrives, the PS3 will be sitting very pretty with it’s built in Blu-ray player.
To be quite honest, I am not the biggest Blu-ray fan when it comes to movies.There’s just something painfully real that destroys the immersion when watching Casino Royal at 1920×1080. However, flip on BBC’s “Planet Earth” in its full high-def glory, and I will happily whistle the theme tune to the A-team whilst intermittently mimicking David Attenborough’s iconic commentary, in full 7.1 surround sound, of course.
5. The PS3’s potential. Fanboys have been banging on for years about their console being technically more powerful than the competition. I won’t comment here, because, well, I am completely unqualified in this regard. I can say however, with relative confidence, that it would seem that developers are beginning to get a handle on the PS3’s development tools. Sony’s console undoubtedly contains a lot of untapped power, and I think that when it hits its stride it will be something special.
So there we have it. 5 reasons 2009 should at least be better for the PS3 than 2008 was.
