Apple announced that they have exceeded their goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008.
Apple sold 6.9 million iPhone 3Gs this quarter, which exceeds the total number of original iPhones sold (6.1 million) throughout its lifetime. Since the launch of the iPhone 3G, Apple has increased the number of distribution points to over 30,000 locations worldwide.

Steve Jobs made a special appearance to announce that Apple had beaten RIM [creators of the hallowed Blackberry] in the 4th quarter by selling 6.9 million iPhone 3Gs, compared to RIM’s 6.1 million handsets sold. Additionally, Apple is now the 3rd largest mobile phone supplier in the world as measured in revenues after Nokia and Samsung.

Jobs also announced that Apple is expecting to sell its 200 millionth application today, just 102 days after the App Store was launched. There are now over 5500 applications in the App Store to date, and the rate of submissions is increasing each week.

With its exceptional success, Apple’s iPhone has oficially done to the phone industry what it’s iPod did to the music industry.
