The Robot Hall of Fame at Carnegie Melon University has recently announced five new inductees.
The hall of fame, exists to recognize “excellence in robotics technology worldwide and honours the fictional and real robots that have inspired and made breakthrough accomplishments in robotics” and was created by Carnegie Melon University in April 2003 to call to attention the increasing contribution of robots to society.
Each year a panel of scholars, writers, designers, researchers and entrepreneurs select a number of real and fictional robots for induction into the Robot Hall of Fame. The inductees are honoured at a small ceremony at Carnegie Melon’s school of Computer Science.
The list this year includes:
1. NASA Mars Rovers Spirit and Opportunity,
2. iRobot Roomba,
3. DaVinci Medical Robot System,
4. Huey, Dewey, and Louie, from the 1971 film ‘Silent Running’ and
5. T-800 Terminator from the 1984 film ‘The Terminator’.
The Spirit and Opportunity are a pair of wheeled rovers that landed on Mars five years ago for purposes of exploration. They were initially designed to operate for only 90 days but are still working today.
The second inductee is the iRobot Roomba which is one of the most successful commercial robots to date. The disk shaped device was designed to vacuum floors in domestic environments.
The Robot Hall of Fame would not be complete without mentioning the contribution that robots have made to the medical profession. The third inductee, the DaVinci, assists surgeons to perform very delicate tasks on a small scale. It is used for minimally invasive surgery which is sometimes referred to as keyhole surgery.
The fourth inductee as a group is, Huey, Dewey and Louie. These were the names given to three service drones by Freeman Lowell a lone surviving crewman of the space freighter the ‘Valley Forge’ in 1971’s Space epic ‘Silent Running’. These robots assisted Lowell in maintaining plants and trees that had become extinct on earth. Today Carnegie Mellon has two sponsored programs that explore the use of robots in apple orchards and orange groves. In this way Huey, Dewey and Louie are remarkably similar in terms of technology to what is possible in robotics today.
The final mention on the list is the T-800 Terminator. This robot was the cyborg assassin from 1984’s ‘The Terminator’. “It has become a cult symbol and gained in popularity to the extent that in 2008, The Terminator was deemed ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’ by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry,” said Don Marinelli, executive producer of Carnegie Mellon’s Entertainment Technology Center.
Matt Mason, director of Carnegie Melon’s Robotic Institute said “As with our last group of inductees, real robots again outnumber the fictional ones,” adding that he believes that, “this is the beginning of a trend, as robots such as Spirit and Opportunity, Roomba, and DaVinci are approaching or even exceeding performance levels that once were only imagined.”
