Microsoft has introduced a cashback service offering users savings of between 2 to 30 percent when they shop online using Live Search.

The idea is that by offering ‘cold hard cash’ they will draw online shoppers away from Google and also “convince advertisers it can combat Google’s increasing share of the online ad market,” according to the BBC article.

Some of the retailers who are involved in this scheme are Barnes and Noble, Sears, Home Depot and a list of others who make up the 10 million plus catalogue of products available.

“The overwhelmingly positive feedback from all the partners confirms there is this opportunity for change,” Mr Gates said in his keynote speech at the end of the company’s digital ad conference in Redmond.

Unfortunately it’s only available to people in the US.

Not everyone is enthusiastic about Microsoft’s new scheme. Om Malik told BBC news, “This is not going to affect Google. Google is so much better.”

“Microsoft is like a bad restaurant – no matter what the incentive, you don’t want to eat there. Their product isn’t working and their share of the market proves that.”

Whilst Live Search may not be able to match Google Search just yet I think it’s a step in the right direction. In the past Microsoft appeared to be slumbering while Google streaked ahead and became the next big thing in the Information Age.

And as CNET’s Charles Cooper put it, there’s no harm in giving it a shot.
