I am still not 100% sure whether or not this is actually helping us in any way, but I found it rather interesting to see that the Department of Home Affairs is using SMS and internet technology to ‘speed up’ the rather drawn out process of issuing ID documents.
It took quite a few clicks to find it on the Department’s website www.dha.gov.za, but I eventually discovered the “ID Ur-self” button and was taken to what I was looking for:
The Department has set up a system so that you can track the process of the issuing of your ID. Using www.sabceducation.co.za/youthid as a portal, one can find out how far they are with your ID, you get to hear wonderful songs about your ID, find out what to do when there is a mistake on your ID, and you can even track the issuing process via SMS. They have also tried to make it cool [since most IDs are being issued to teens], but they may have gone too far with this one because rapping the line ‘a green ID book is cool’ is about as believable as the ‘Back to school is cool’ slogan.
Being fortunate enough not to have had to deal with the Department of Home Affairs for a very very long time, I am not sure if this has actually helped speed up the process, but I am sure Department staff are enjoying their jobs a little more now that they dont have to deal with as many irritated South Africans each day.
