Apple may soon offer their iTunes users free access to the entire music library. The catch is that the price of an iPod and iPhone will go up to compensate.

The price that consumers will be willing to pay for unlimited access appears to be the sticking point according to the Financial Times. Researchers have indicated that a premium of $100 once or else a monthly subscription model with a fee of $7-$8 per month is optimal.

The pressure causing Apple to consider changing the way they do business appears to come from Nokia who are also in talks with music groups to try and get as many of these companies on board as possible for their “all you can eat” model.

This change is way overdue from Apple but without the necessary competition there was no need for them to modify their business model. Thankfully Nokia is turning on the heat which should make for an interesting contest.
