3G/HSDPA will now be available at speeds of 7.2Mbps through mobile phone SIM cards.
Telia Sonera in Sweden is partnering with Dell to provide mobile broadband using mobile SIM cards, something that is not new in SA.

But what is different is the speed at which the Scandinavian countries, namely Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark, will receive.

“Now we have really reached the point where you can connect your laptop to the mobile network and surf on the Internet at very much the same speed as with normal broadband access in the fixed network,” said Kenneth Karlberg, president of TeliaSonera’s business area mobility services, reported Information Week.

Looks like wireless technologies are making advances in the speed department but there is no doubt that fixed services will remain superior for a long time still.

The good news for South Africans is that should wireless offerings start to compete favourably against wired services, SA is in an ideal position to take advantage of these technological advances.

But increasingly the method of connection is becoming less important with the goal being ubiquitous broadband.
