MTN might buy Telkom
I don’t see any good coming from this as MTN has never been a price competition leader but rather a follower. Neotel doesn’t aim to compete on price with Telkom now, and knowing that they will have a company with a known and proven history of being a price follower, they will have even less worries when it comes to adjusting prices for market pull.
The Department of Communication is throwing rocks at any undersea cable that wants to land
Why? Apparently majority local ownership is a requirement now. I don’t see any hope in this sphere as corruption will be the only way to bypass such insanity.
In the public interest as long as it keeps telecoms away from the masses
None of the government policies seem to get the Internet closer to the masses. Forget the Internet, fixed line telephony, the most basic of basic telephony isn’t affordable to the masses yet! Why not? None of the policies government are looking at seems geared at driving down basic telephony costs and Telkom is dancing around any so called efforts like it is not even there.
The amount of times government has failed to curtail this vicious circle is beyond the idiotic! It is corrupt!
I have lost faith in the processes. I have lost faith in the people that are supposed to be on our side. I don’t think I am ill informed at all, but I have lost hope. Naturally these examples are not enough for my opinion. There are countless other events including known opinions that our Minister of Communications have regarding telecoms and IT, poor explanations to dumb decisions made on shows like Carte Blanche and various radio mediums like 702.
There is the recent interference by the President to ensure MTN gets a stake in Benin, but he cannot for some baffling reason pull rank in his own country to ease the telecoms piss-up that is happening here.
I believe we are being fooled into thinking things are moving, when all that is happening is another roll and shuffle to see who gets to benefit from what transaction regarding Telkom et al next.
I am extremely sad to say it, but I don’t think there is any hope to solve this crisis in even the medium term. Naturally I would love to be proven wrong, but am not going to sit by waiting anymore. I think it is a waste of time to try and push as government is immovable. The only people who can move things along are the majority and they are not informed enough to stand up for something that they have no reason not to have. Affordable, good quality telecoms.
We are the ones that have access to the medium, but we have nil influence. We can use the processes like ICASA, but Telkom will find ways of circumventing it because it has friends higher up the food chain.
The fight for better telecoms will go nowhere without the proper backing of the majority. If you consider yourself middleclass or above, this fight cannot be won by you. The poor needs to rise up and fight now! We have done what can be done.
Now it is time for the masses to wake up and shake the foundations of the likes of government and Telkom. This will take a considerable amount of time. In the meantime, we are doomed to suffer high prices for tiny cap, expensive phone lines and the like.
Where corruption sets in revolt is the only thing that can shake it loose. Am I sure there is corruption? Personally yes I am convinced that the things going on in South Africa’s telecoms environment can only be explained by corruption. Can I prove it?
