Well it seems as expected that Netbooks are indeed morphing into extremely portable and very powerful tablet computers. Small footprint, light to carry, multi-touch enabled devices ready to do all you need it to in order to take your office with you wherever you go and on top of that the functionality of flipscreen tablets too. The office and the home will never be the same. It turns out the tablet handiness is now boiling down to the lower priced market as well with some models going on sale for less than 200$.
Plenty of computer makers have opted into the tablet market with HP, Lenovo and Sony releasing their own tablet netbook variants. I find the Lenovo Ideapad U1 Hybrid Notebook/Tablet most intriguing of all but the HP multi-touch tablet (so far unnamed) will probably offer the best bang for your buck.
Sony’s tablet is not a traditional computer with the normal functionality one would expect. They call it a portable Internet device. I am not sure whether it will catch the wider market with it but who knows?!!?
One thing is however for sure. Apple will have to hop on to the bandwagon. Their Tablet will come. It has become inevitable now. How it will stack up against the competition remains to be seen but I am looking at Lenovo and HP to give the direction. Most of the newly announced devices will go on sale from the middle of this year and none of them will come in over $1000 US. I assume there will however be a little bit of competition price wise which could even out the price spectrum a lot. I think you should be able to pick up the HP in South Africa for around R6000 all in.
