This is the message I just received from Openweb:

Hey Friends,

Once again, due to the popularity of our previous Gold upgrade offers,we are offering an upgrade promotion that you cannot refuse!

If you have:

* A Standard Uncapped account
* A Lite Uncapped account

you can upgrade to Gold uncapped from 1 January from only R39 per month more on a 384k connection.

Total for Gold:

384k Gold Uncapped - R258
512k Gold Uncapped - R338
4Mbps Gold Uncapped - R659

If you do not have an OpenWeb account, you can also take advantage of our Gold Uncapped promotion.

What makes Gold better?

Gold has a 25% lower contention ratio than Standard Uncapped, meaning that speeds will be improved, and your overall experience will be better!

How to apply:

Email the following information to [email protected]

Name and Surname:
Email address:
Contact Number:
Current ADSL username (if applicable):

Bank Name:
A/C No:
A/C Type:
Branch Code:
ID Number:

We will then setup the debit order, and send you your new details on 1 January. The first debit order will come off on the same day.

Promotion ends on 20 December 2010. Once you are on the promotional price, that will be your Gold price for life, or until you cancell.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Kind regards

Any ideas how I can continue paying R318 for OpenWeb 384k Gold Uncapped every month without feeling screwed?

I just hate getting spam emails from Openweb and AXXESS - wish it would stop.

Thinking about switching over from Mweb but i would like to know what speeds do users get during the day?
With MWEB i get 1KB-2KB on Torrents all day which is really crappy and at night the speed only picks up after 12pm

What do you guys get on Gold?

Torrents not so hot. But you can avoid all shaping without punishment (so far). Get it onto HTTP, and you can download full speeds all times of the day.

how do i go about that?

Here's the reply I received:

You are on a superior Gold network. If you move to the R258, you will be on a totally different backbone.

If you are on the vb network then the "superior" part applies!

trltec.co.za aerovps.com also have the same service as downstorm

I am superior :) A bit odd that they have different levels of Gold... but my account performs...so I'm happy (on vb)

I am on the gold IS backbone.

Torrents: Speeds sucks until 12:00 am at night on torrents. (200-300 kbps after 12)

HTTP: Full speed.

Downstorm:Speed starts at 5pm in the evening (100-200 kbps)

Weekends: from Friday evening to Monday mourning Full Speeds (all protocols) (300-400 kbps)

I think it is worth it if you download torrents use downstorm and request to be put on the Vodacom backbone.

I have done 100gigs for December with no problems (torrents)

Upgraded to gold in October. Responded to this mail from Openweb:

Hey Friends,

I have managed to negotiate an excellent Gold Uncapped special offer for you!

Gold Uncapped has less people using one pipe, thus it is faster, less shaped and generally works better than Standard based account.

If you have a current OpenWeb ADSL subscription on:

Standard Uncapped
Lite Uncapped

or are a new user that has not signed up before, you qualify for the following Gold promotion:

384k Gold Uncapped - R248
512k Gold Uncapped - R338
4Mbps Gold Uncapped- R669

All you have to do to grab your account is activate a debit order with OpenWeb.

Provide us with the following banking details:

Bank Name:
A/C No:
A/C Type:
Branch Code:
ID Number:

We will then activate your account for 1 November.

The price will be locked in for life for folks who signup before 25 October 2010.

Sent admin@openweb my banking details requesting that it be a debit order transaction to take advantage of the special that locks you into the special price for as long as you are signed up.

October, I receive the login details to start November. End of November, I get an invoice for the standard uncapped account?!?.

Beginning of December, no connection. I mail Keoma. he replies with a message as follows:

Thank you so much for your email!
I upgraded your current account to Gold:

Same username/password. But I still have no clue as to how much I am being billed for or whether the special rate applies or not. special rate only applies to those who signed up in October he upgrades my account in December - What account? My account I supposedly signed up for on debit order was deactivated at the end of November and I was invoced for a standard acoount!??! Weird...

That is a small example of Openweb's support. At the moment, my gold account does not work anymore. e-mails to both ceo@openweb and admin@openweb are not responded to. The only response I got was from a 2nd pm attempt here on MYBB after complaining on the Openweb Unapped Feedback thread. I then get issued with a new account which is unusable - downloads going @ 5 -12kbps! - NNTP and any http file host.

I have pm'd, mailed and posted on the thread, but no response. That is the problem with Openweb. When things go wrong, you end up battling to get a response from them, seeing as they do not have an after hours support line. Most people, like myself, work during the day and do not have the opportunity of phoning their support during office hours - hell! We work!. Instead, you are left with support in the way of e-mails - which they deny receiving - and pm's which are a hit and a miss. Yes, Keoma - you denied receiving 3 e-mails which my mail client received confirmation that your server had received them - GASP!

A pity though, as the first month on Openweb gold was good. After that? Ask Keoma.... he reckons my Telkom line keeps losing sync and was stuck on the last session. The new accont he sent was supposed to overcome this Telkom 'fault' (Oh yes, I am on Telkom like everyone else!_. Funny that! I only rebooted my router once or twice this month. The last time was because of very slow dowload speeds. That was Saturday. Today, I still have no solution!
