My mother uses it and loves it.

I like the smell of Sta Soft so I have not switched over, since you can not use sta soft with the bal.

******99 : I do not know about the infra red.
But read about what washing powder does to water. They claim it to be the same thing.
 
Just wash without anything, no balls no powder nothing.
 
I tried one of these...

You have to wash your machine out with vinegar before you put it in to remove the old soap. Then you leave the ball out in the sun for a day or so. The sun ionises the stuff inside the ball and then this is supposed to clean your washing.

We used it for about a month and it seemed to clean our clothes, then I wondered how different it was to just putting clothes in to warm water and rolling it round for an hour ? I think clothes that are not really dirty will get clean anyway.
The problem is that my wife is a doctor, she often works 24hour+ shifts and comes home covered in blood and other sif things... you need the harsh chemicals to de-sif those clothes.

I must admit that long term your clothes would probably last a tad longer if you used something like this instead of washing powder. Washing powder fades and dries out your clothes. If you didn't have to wash the damn machine out with vinegar then it would be nice to be able to use the ball for light washes.

The infrared claims from ceramics probably come from Japan. There is a technology known as "Effective Microorganisms" which is a blend of lactic acid bacteria, purple phototrophic bacteria, and yeast. EM is an incredibly powerful technology in its own right, and has multiple uses in farming, human health, waste and disaster clean up, and many others. Somewhere along the line they discovered that fermenting various clays with EM produces a ceramic with some interesting properties. They claim all sorts of things from "nuclear resonance" to "infrared rays", and other "woo woo" nonsense. I don't know if it's a lack of research on their side, a lack of understanding of what is going on, or the details being lost in translation to English, or possibly even them keeping the real data to themselves... They do mention that the effects of the ceramics probably come from the "purple phototrophic bacteria", which not only can live on light, but came to earth from space! And can stand extreme temperatures, including being baked into ceramics!

I personally like the idea of purple phototrophic bacteria from space, so I ingest them regulary - they make a mother tincture product with high levels of these bacteria (not certified for human consumption, but hey, it's space critters - nom nom!)

Okay getting back on topic, I think these people making the balls are giving too much credit to their ceramics! I'm not sure if they even use EM ceramics, but it sounds similar. Personally I'd use a bit of soap with them. Never the less, don't throw the baby out with the bath water, EM is an incredibly powerful technology, despite the nonsense associated with it through these ceramic products.
 
If little plastic balls emitted powerful IR (or any EM) radiation for years of use, and enough to have any effect on laundry or to tear Hydrogen off water, we would not be making coal/nuclear power plants. It is pretty classic pseudo-science.

Another and more detailed set of trials was run by the Consumers' Association of Australia, with a report published in its April 1998 issue of Choice, the Australian counterpart of Which. They tested both cotton and polycotton, several types of 'laundry ball' devices, as well as a large number of regular powder and concentrate detergents, and evaluated the results electronically. They used cold water, but really cold - 20 degrees centigrade - throughout, and found the laundry balls no better than plain water (with a 'relative performance score' of about 55%, compared to the top scores of about 90% obtained by some detergents). And, incidentally, the so-called 'green detergents' (like most of the other detergents tested they are not readily available in the UK but are probably similar to Ecover) were not appreciably better.

Or maybe common sense is enough. I like to think of laundry balls as powerbalance bangles for underpants.
