Video games cause short-sighted Hong Kong children

Good time to invest in Laser Eye Sugery! It's going to boom in the next 3+ years with studies like these...
 
Its not our fault that they cant beat bowser on the SNE in 1980 that they hate videogames so much now.
 
I am also not convinced it is the video games, there are a lot of other factors that can contribute to eye strain.
Luckily for the whole world of video games the XBOX 360 now has Kinect that will take the game playing public off the chair and get them to interact with video games on a whole new level.
This piece of technology is really amazing and it is amazing not to be stuck behind a desk or with a controller in the hand.
I have found that the distance one is from the screen also increases with Kinect. This would result in a lot more healthy game playing public.

Of course not. It's the long period of time spent focusing on something so close to you, causing your eyes to lose their ability to focus on distant objects. I'm sure the same thing could happen if they spent the equivalent time reading books.

I spent way too much time on the PC in my teenage years. Had perfect eyesight when I was 12, it degraded over the years. Now I'm shortsighted and wear glasses.

Its rather a silly use of language... if you think about it video games are played on a TV so that is something that is quite far away.

Hand held games perhaps.... but not video games.
 
Not being racist but I've seen alot more Chinese and Taiwanese people with glasses than any other group. Could it not also be partly a race characteristic, that they are more prone to eye sight problems? I wonder if there is a study on it?
 
Same problem spend my life infront of a pc screen. Short sighted but not terribly so only -1 which is not alot and it doesn't seem to be getting worse so its probably my body saying wtf would i need to focus on something far away might aswell uninstall that app.
 
Rubbish article. Complete conjecture. Correlation does not equal causation.
 
Why can it not simply be genetic? If this was the case would it not be prevalent elsewhere?
 
Spent my whole life gaming, I have 20/20 vision. Genetics is as important to degrading eyesight as environmental factors.

Correct, any kind of close work can strain your eyes.

Depends very much on the size of the display.
