Had the dog for about 5 months and it's probably a year old now. Dunno the type either. It's a cross between a fox terrier and a ..... it's a pavement special ok. It's shedding a SERIOUS amount of hair. :( Some months much more than others.

Any solutions other than referring me to the vet?

Any bumps on the skin as well? It could be a food allergy but I have absolutely no certainty.

Only a vet would be able to tell you for sure :o

Some dogs do tend to shed a lot, especially during summer. Do you brush it regularly? Also have you given it a bath (just asking simple questions so I know where you stand)

Dogs should not be bathed to often, it can increase their shedding...

Could also be a medical reason

My puppy used to loose a lot of hair so I took him to the vet and it turned out to be a skin infection. The vet gave me this shampoo to use once a week, and that solved the problem. That was a few months ago. Recently he seems to be having a similar problem, and this time he also has a ear infection, so I'm gonna take him to the vet tomorrow. His ear's got a horrible smell.

yes, the spca.... hell even the pdsa, no use you coming online telling us how worried you are about your dogs hair falling out, take it to the vet.
if he has fleas and scratches alot get dip followed by a dosage of frontline.

Agree with taking him to the vet if it is at the point where you are worried. My older Labby is molting like a mother trucker at the moment but does so every year around this time. Every time I let him swim I have to clean the filter after a few hours it gets so caked up.
