Without wealth, health probably below par (i.e. hungry), and no leisure time either.

In spite of these difficulties, Mabonda achieved distinctions in Xitsonga, Mathematics, Life Orientation, Civil Technology, Engineering Graphics and Physical Science.

On the day of his English exam, Mabonda was forced to walk the last stretch of his journey to school.

“I got stuck in the train I was travelling in.

I got out of the train at Midway Station and walked the rest of the way to school.

If I didn’t walk to school I would have been extremely late for my paper and I would not have been able to write.

That was the paper that I did not do well in,” he told The Citizen yesterday.

Mabonda scored a B for English despite arriving tired and late.

His father, Ben, was delighted and proud of his son’s achievements.

“I am so happy he has done so well. I only wish I had money to send him to university,” he said.

Heartbreaking and heartening at the same time.
 
He should be able to get a bursary with those marks... And then a student loan to pay the rest. (Especially since he got an A for Maths and Science)
 
Shows what a difference a person makes in the public school system. Pity this guy is one in a million between his peers.
 
Very respectable performance.

I don't quite get why he can't go to uni though?!? With 6 As & right skin colour he can load up on bursaries. Hell I know people who walked out of uni 100k richer from bursaries.

Well, after all the exposure he is getting now, he will definately be going to UNI, and rightfully so.
 
Congratulations to this young man, well done! Refreshing difference from the "we demand" attitude.
 
Well, @ wits it's R4000 off for every distiction... so that's R24 000 off the tuition fees to start... if he takes a student loan for first year (which won't be that bad) and applies for a bursary for the next 3 years of study, he'll have an amazing jump start to life!

I really don't want to order a No.7 from him at McDonald's this year. Go forth brah!
 
Where there's a will, they say. That chap's level of determination needs only the smallest bit of help to make a success of his studies.
