56K Dial-up P2P Port Shaping

Hi,

I'm a 56K Dial-up MWeb user. I always manage to connect at 50.6K. I use eMule for P2P.
Over the past few months my eMule has been 'shaped' to 4 kB/s combined for downstream and upstream traffic. Whereas previously I could set eMule to download at 5kB and upload at 2kB, now my best ratio is 3kB for download and 1kB for upload due to the 4kB limit.

I would like to know whether my case of P2P port shaping on 56k dial-up is now a standard feature across all 56k ISPs, or is it a limitation set by MWeb and/or their provider?
Also, are there different 56k ISPs who do not shape?
Is this same kind of shaping implemented on 64k ISDN and ADSL services?

I just find it very unsettling that such limitations are being placed on even the cheapest and slowest (ie 56k) internet users.

No, MWeb have not told me anything (do they usually inform customers about technical changes?)
I'm assuming some form of shaping has been implemented due to the eMule performance. I have never had anything like this for almost 2 years of using eMule until the past few months.

I'm pretty convinced that MWeb Shape their dialup customers too.

I know that i can connect to two diffrent numbers, the normal mweb 0860 no, and the SAIX no: 0860 00 (SAIX)7249 and a week or two ago i noticed that my torrents were 'flying' down at a whole 14bytes/second, a far cry from the normal 14k i get(ISDN 128k), it continued the whole weekend, and i tried uninstalling stuff as i thought there was some software on my pc slowing things down..

Then on the monday while checking my ipcop box's logs i noticed that i was dialing the mweb no for some reason, so i changed my ipcop settings back to the SAIX no, and guess what.. My speed was back to normal just to be fair i reconnected with the mweb no, and the performance was just as bad as it had been on the weekend..

I only know that i can connect with the SAIX no from the old Tiscali days, try it yourself, you may also see a huge speed boost, just change the number u dial in with to 0860007249, the SAIX server seems to authenticate my username and password with no problems... You may see a huge speed boost...

Thanks for the info brooko, I will give the SAIX number a try tonight and see whether it makes a difference in my case.

i am also on 56k mweb, i havnt been having problems lately, wonder why you have...

What is South AFrica comming 2 ? I long for the day when i can turn on my TV and Download on T1 through the same Cable and only pay $14US PER MONTH - best of all its UNCAPPED - TELSKUM YOU HERE THAT UNCAPPED

hmmmm, so 4*8 is 32, so you're probably getting a bad connection. Btw dialup is half duplex, you can only upload or download regardless.

Unfortunately I was unable to authenticate with the SAIX server, so I will try to borrow someone else's SAIX dial-up account to run the tests.

Since Friday I have run tests to confirm that the same 4kB/s capping occurs when using Torrents and Warez P2P (I've tried different ports etc.)
I have also been testing on a SAIX dial-up account, and have been getting the same 4kB/s restriction with all the P2P programs.
