Just got an email that my account is moving from @afrihost.co.za -> @is.afrihost.co.za, apparently an Afrihost-IS uncapped account - wondering if any of you have had same and what your experience is.

Got a feeling they gonna shape the cr@p out of me.

I noticed IS FUP is usage below 50%, I could be wrong but im sure Afrihost was 80%.

Any comments please let me know
 
If you were on afrihost uncapped I'm sure the experience will be better. If you were on afrihost capped it should be worse.
 
Okay let me tell you a little story. I was on afrihost uncapped for about a week. Then one day I got home and found I am getting like 20kbps. Sent them a mail to find out what is going on and they said they did it to get me to contact them because they have moved my account to the is.afrihost.com system. Okay no worries I got the new username and password logged in and since then I have been getting cr@p speeds. Email back and forth and ongoing and they insisted I am not being managed. On a 4meg account uncapped I was getting in the region of 120kbps and then it wasn't even a constant speed it would drop and spike and just be horrible. Finally got a helpdesk guy that would listen and he asked me to test with another account back on the @afrihost network, immediately the speeds went back to normal. He said he will open a ticket with IS for me but by the time IS finally got around to responding I have closed my account and moved to Mweb. Now at least I have constant speeds all the day and I am smiling all the way.
 
I gathered that, thing is what ISP is going to give an uncapped user a different account so they can surf faster, knowing that they are a relatively high user.
 
I'm also experiencing a drop in performance. I'm on a 384 line, so I'm not a high user. Are people sure that it's time to ditch Afrihost? Can we still use our old username and expect better performance?
 
My Afrihost, uncapped 384, new, super duper IS account is so slow, the speedtest.net site times out. I tried to download something now and got a whopping 0.8k.
 
I've just found out that I'm being shaped. For the first 10 days of Jan I was downloading approx 1.6 Gb per day on my 384 line. I wasn't shaped by Afrihost. I changed over to the is.afrihost address, and they started shaping my account based on the first 3 days of downloads (also 1.6Gb per day).

There is no clear explanation of what the threshold is, or how long it will take me to get back down to an acceptable level. I'd read on these discussions that it was unlikely that I would be shaped if I was on a 384 line. Can anyone shed some light? I'm quite happy to try to keep to a monthly limit if I knew what the @£$% it was!
 
As I understand it, with uncapped IS accounts, if your usage is in the top 50%, you will be throttled, if you are in the bottom 50%, you will not be throttled. I'm on Afrihost 4mb uncapped. It's exactly halfway through the month, my usage stands on 24gigs, I've not been throttled. So the message seems to be, as long as you don't go mad and d/l everything in sight, you should be ok.

On the 13th of this month, I had churned through an incredible 13Gb, one Gb a day keeps the doctor away!!!! I've done 2Gb in the 7 days since then. If that is a lot, then shoot me!
 
Still happy with my 4meg uncapped account, since August last year more than 1.5TB of data has gone through my Afrihost account ( 1.3TB Downloaded and 213GB uploaded ) and that with me being in the top 50% almost all the time :)
 
Most of the 384, 512 and 1024 IS Uncapped accounts have a rolling window of 10 GB in 10 days and top 20% being shaped, and the 4096 accounts have a 50% being shaped.

Contact Openweb and find out about the Gold Uncapped. Maybe Keoma can still give you a good price.
 
The serious problem with this idiotic logic is that at any point in time 30% of users will be heavily shaped and 20% shaped to almost nothing regardless of total usage.
 
I was getting 200bytes speed and if i am lucky then 10kbps late night on Afrihost 384kbps uncapped account..woooooooo.. record break service isnt it? i just cancel my account..
 
Indeed, I have had a similar experience with afrihost, they can consider me a lost client...
