ISP websites and the influence they have

I was just curious as to which ISP in your opinion has the best website (functionality and looks) and how this effects your decision on choosing.

My opinion of the best website is Web Africa, especially with the functionality it provides. This is a huge influencing factor, especially when it is backed up by comprehensive support through a web based ticket system and online tutorial.

Agreed.
Have been very impressed with Web Africa. Simple, elegant use of HTML.
And their support is amazing.

Though am still planning on jumping ship to SAOL come Nov 1st, I follow my wallet :)

Just wish SAOL would return my emails... so much for considering switching to them..
Talk about websites, have you checked out the brillliant Telkom one...
*tonque in cheek*
Very good indication of their brilliant service...hehe

As a web developer, I was also impressed by their website and decided that I'm moving to WA. Then I tried to register for 1 Nov but the shopping cart still showed the old pricing. Next I sent a email to support:

On your new pricing you clearly stipulate that the 3GB account sells for R199 VAT included. When I add this to the shopping cart it says R220. Please clarify.

On which I received this lame reply :

The price you are currently seeing in your shopping cart is the pricing for October. Come November we will modify our pricing to then be inline with that stipulated in our adsl_november_pricing page.

Please let us know should you have any further queries.

I replied to the email and got the reply below  So, another one bites the dust.

Unfortunately our system does not take into account "future" pricing when attempting to order for the following month (as the ability to sign up for the next month is a relatively new option introduced due to requests from ADSL users), as such until we modify the actual service prices within our database, the new prices will not reflect (we are however planning on putting these changes in within the next day or two - in conjunction with a new services list that I have just completed and put in place.

There is a lot of preparation that has been done (and still needs to be done) for November 1st.

If you wish to subscribe on November 1st you can also phone us and we can set you up on the phone, which will take approximately 5 minutes. Generally ordering is done via our website, but in the cases where people do not have internet access (such as yourself).

Admittedly our shopping cart should have the ability to show the next month's pricing should you choose to activate the next month, but as indicated above, this is not the case as of yet. If you were to order now it would invoice you for the current amount, which is naturally incorrect. As indicated however, we will be putting these changes in within the next day or two, at which point the prices will be correct and you can sign up with us.

Please let us know should you have any further queries.

You know the sad thing is not everybody will notice something like that. Thats how these guys make money. As soon as a comany does that I step far away from them. Their chancers...

SAOL and WebAfrica both have nice sites imo.. appealing to the eye.. there are definitely some shockers out there tho :)

As indicated in the ticket the new prices have now been put in place within our system and any signups from now on will take into account the new pricing - and are as such now reflected on our website.

Don't hold your breath.

The one and only reason why I never signed up with them four months back.

Not sure which website I find the best, but a pet peeve I have is when they have a "fantastic client page" which says check back here for regular updates and then they have info there from like March.

After perusing SAOL.com's page I am also very impressed. Although I can't see their "client area" I like there site. It is a great portal which I actually prefer to iAfrica's.

@warichard / wamatt
Outa curiosity is your site a custom built site, build from scratch or is it a very modified CMS which you have done a great job at customizing

And unfortunately Axxess.... Templates are great untill you are caught out... Please just never offer web design/development and have a template as your home page.

... thats just you been siff. This is the same ISP that is using money out of their own pockets to lodge a complaint with ICASA against Telkom. Do you have any idea about development, and how much work must go into something like this? Handling two pricing schemes can not be easy, and mistakes do happen.

Im impressed by the look of both soal and wa, although wa prob has more functionality in there. That said i was happy with axxess, even though they didnt have the prettiest site, it did the job. It certainly speeks well for the dev skills if your looking for a site to be built though.

Had no problems signing up with SOAL (by email) or with their support, when i had a query about billling (by phone) they offered to put me straight through to the manager of accounts and it was sorted out within 5 min. Just hope they can keep the great prices going.

If you read properly you'll get what I'm talking about Wiz,
Lets try again.. read the post I was replying to

I have been extremely impessed with WA's webpage and support, can call them any time of the day or night and there is someone there to offer help, their responses to emails are quick and answer all questions that I have asked, I am just sad that there are no IS accounts available from WA yet as I need the extra local bandwidth and do not want SAIX to get my money.

Our official position on IS is this:

IS are still developing a product for larger ISPs who use run their own authentication servers thats affordable. Their per GB wholesale price is R100 p/gb. Which clearly is not competitive.

We are in talks around this and and will keep you informed on any developments as its something we want to offer because some clients clearly want it. (we have no love for the monopoloy - believe me!)

Aside: Aparently its RSN (real soon now) status.
