Hi all, I know this has been discussed before, but a search for "LCD" returned no results. I am completely overwhelmed by the variety to chose from, and desperately need some help.

I am looking for a mid-range 17" LCD monitor in the R2000 - R3500 max. price bracket. It will be used primarily for browsing, office apps, video, DVD, etc. So main features should be bright, vivid colours, good text clarity, no ghosting on video, etc. I don't game, so I guess it does not have to be 'lightning' quick.

From what I have read, a lot of the 8ms panels sacrifice colour depth and viewing angle for better response times. I have not seen any 8ms 17" with a 8-bit depth (16.7M colours), only 6-bit (16.2M colours). Yet, some of the 12ms and above panels do have an 8-bit colour depth. Whether you can actually notice the difference, I don't know. It does not have to be analogue & digital, but DVI support might be preferable for future upgradeability.

I quite like the looks and design of some of the LG range, and the Samsung's seem to get good reviews. The BenQ has good specs on paper, but not sure of the quality. Another one is the Hyundai, which I think has a Samsung panel, and comes with DVI and USB at a reasonable price.
Unfortunately, I do not have time to actually go out and have a look at all my options, so I am going to have to base my purchase on reviews, pictures, and user comments.

Some of the models I have been looking at are:
BenQ - FP71G+
Samsung - 710V-W
LG - L1720B
LG - L1780U
Hyundai - 17Q+ (I think)

Please give some first hand comments on the above models, and recommend any not in the list worthy of mention. Where ever possible, please give model number, approx. price, and where purchased.

PS. I am busy creating and Excel doc, with important spec comparison, and a small thumbnail. I will host it when complete as a reference for anyone else interested.

Toms did a review of these and other LCDs: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20041123/index.html

But if your willing to go up to R3500. You should be able to get a very decent 19". Have a look around.

Thanks photoman, got that one on my list. Is there anyone that has one of the newer Viewsonics, what are your thoughts on them? From reviews, they seem to be good.

Is there a NOTICABLE difference between:

a) 250 & 300 cd/m² brightness,
b) 450, 500 & 700 :1 contrast ratio,
c) 16.2 & 16.7 million colours (6-bit & 8-bit)

The contrast and brightness would probably make a difference, but how much. I don't know is the human eye would detect the colour difference, but 8-bit might appear more vivid. Any thoughts?

I've got the Samsung 710v and am very happy. Even though its a 25ms response time I can play every game perfectly fine. No probs in CSS, Far Cry, NFSU2, BF2 etc... Can't see any ghosting. Great monitor and you can get it for 1700R meanwhile.

Hmm I would go for the Acer AL1751Bs, and if you can afford it, I would even upgrade to the AL1951Bs, which is an awesome screen, and costs around 3400-3500 inc vat...

I ordered it abt a month ago and still haven't received it tho, so be prepared to wait...

Yes everything, and NFSU is also no problem... To be honest i don't see any difference in my monitor and a 6 or 8ms.

I also tested everything and you couldn't make out any ghosting with normal colours (green, yellow etc. and what there is in games.). The only ghosting occurs in extrem conditions with a white block moving on a black surface. That you can see but in movies/dvds and games I have NEVER experienced any ghosting whatsoever, even in the fasted fps games and I do play hl2 farcry nfsu2 gtr ut2004 and similar ones.

But still be careful with other 25ms... The samsung I have is just a very good model, there are other brands and models you behave completely different.

Besides you can get the 710v for as cheap as 1500 from resellers.

Where could I go look at a reasonable range on different LCD's, other than Incredible Corruption?

Codemaster,

You can try www.cyberdyne.co.za for Hyundai monitors. I read some good stuff on the 19" at www.tweakguides.com .

I bought the viewsonic 19" vx series from www.nakedit.co.za . It has a 8ms response time and it's great!

This looks like an awsome monitor. I am gonna contact Samsung SA to see when it is expected. It is available in AUS for about R2755 at the moment.

OK, below is a link to the Excel document I created showing some of the more popular 17" LCD monitors available. Maybe it will save people some time researching the various specs on the web.

I was gifted a pair of LG Flatron L1710B 17' LCD monitors today, not to sure of the specs but I'm not complaining, they are +-6mnths old and hardly used (max 2-3 hours a day in the last 6 or so months)

Thanks,
Have you got a Model # for that monitor? Would like to check out the full specs. At 16.7M colours, it would be one of the few 17" LCD's with 24-bit colour. Have only seen 24-bit on much more expensive LCD's.

You can see the spects on the LG L1710B LCD here:
http://www.lge.com/prodmodeldetail.do?actType=search&page=1&modelCategoryId=060202&categoryId=060202&parentId=06&modelCodeDisplay=L1710BL&model=NOTHING&scategoryId=060202&smodel_display_code=L1710BL

Not a bad little monitor, just a LITTLE outdated spec-wise.

I recently bought 3 Benq 19" LCDs and I'm very impressed with them. Games look great and so do movies, plus the price is awesome :)
Specs are as follows:

Model: FP937S
19" 1280x1024 resolution
12ms response time
500:1 Contrast ratio
250 cd/m2 brightness
DVI & DSub dual input

You can pick them up for about R2.3k ex VAT these days and the new model is also out in SA. I'm buying another 3 LCDs for the office soon and I'm definately sticking with BenQ. The new model I'm getting is about +-R100 more expensive and here's the specs:

Model: FP91G+
19" 1280x1024 resolution
8ms response time
500:1 Contrast ratio
250 cd/m2 brightness
DVI & DSub dual input

PM if you want more info.
