Buying an ADSL/Broadband Router

Hi All,

I would like to buy a router that'll last awhile as the ADSL/Broadband services improve and get cheaper. Please could you guys comment on this router http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=viewProduct&localeCode=EN_ZAF&cid=5&scid=26&pid=1442
Let me know what you think will this work on a DSL 192 or 384 service from telkom, with a view on upgrading to broadband one day when the service is cheaper?

AFAIK any router will do - the 192, 384, 512 speeds don't affect the router - that speed configuration is done else where so you can use any ADSL router and it will work at all Telkom speeds. Again, AFAIK....

a friend of mine had the SMC barricade aswell and it was simple to setup and never really gave problems...also im sure he didnt pay to much for it either

This particular one says it isn't a modem it is a router does that mean I cannot use it?
 
no not necessary!.

routers normally connect via ethernet cable, also routers allow for permanent connection.

with a modem you have to connect most of thime via pppoe via your pc.
so u would make a broadband dial up connection in network connectionc - like normal 56k dial up.

routers also have the option to go both ways. either via pppoe or by routered connection.

also routers can accomodate more than 1 pc at a time using routered mode

Ok cool because that particular one is cheaper. Check this out, I have a Desktop into which I want to put the SMCWPCIT-G 108Mbps and then I have a laptop which has has Intel 2200 Wireless Card 54Mbps then I'll buy SMCWBR14T-G Router and I'm getting ADSL 192. You reckon this'll all work perfectly? Just don't want to buy the wrong stuff.
 
why dont u connect the router to your desktop via the ethernet cable and use your laptop wirelessly?
it will save you on buying a wireless adapter for your desktop.
 
I think I'll do that till I can buy it. I want to get rid of all the wires.

Wires may be untidy, but we will always rely on them! :D
 
Yip, I'll keep them in a box. Till that day. I've ordered the router. Thanks a lot for your help Guys

Hi mas,

I just wanted to confirm with you again. I received the modem today. The WAN plug is obviously a normal RJ45. Which the Telkom technician will have to put on for me. Then checked the PPPoE Configuration page and it has the normal options that I'm used to from the netgears except the LLC option and the VCI/VPI 35 and 8 option. Does this matter? I gather you know smc pretty well. These are the options I have on the WAN configuration.

Use PPPoE Authentication
User Name :
Password :
Please retype your password :
Service Name :
MTU : (576<=MTU Value<=1492)
Maximum Idle Time min
Keep session
Auto-connect
Manual-connect
