Hi people

So what do we do now ?

1 November is rapidly approaching and it would seem that the public is going to be screwed again. ICASA are flapping their gums at a silly name change while prices just keep on rising. The 500% hike in A/DSL Internet connectivity is not acceptable and there just seems that not much can be done about it. As a buisness user of A/DSL, I need access to certain levels of service and bandwidth, currently I am not getting it. Multiple complaints have been sent to ICASA with no effect.

So I ask the question, what now ?

The ADSL struggle has been going on for over two years and it would seem that we are back to square one. Where are the draft A/DSL regulations promised to us oh so many months ago ?

There are a few other things that just don't make any sense to me with regards to A/DSL but I will post them all later. This is an extremely serious matter as we are seeing the digital divide increase even more.

SO WHAT NOW ?
 
Even though you say you need ADSL for business, can you live with something like dail-up/isdn for a couple of days??? If yes, the correct response to Nov 1 would be a enmass consumer boycott: cancel ALL contracts!
 
I agree with ettubrute, but to be honest, I'm one of those guys who probably won't cancel. Dunno if I can do without my fix.
 
MrJones, that's exactly why South African prices and services are on the level where they are! Everybody complains, but still fork out the money/accept the crappy service! Come on! Start being aware of your power as a consumer!
 
I'm cancelling, but according to Telkom I have to cancel the (free trial) video on demand too. So instead I'll drop to 192 & 1gb account then cancel as soon as the video on demand trial is over (Jan/Feb). At least this way I'll get something free from Telkom.

The problem is I think they would gladly see us go back to Dial -up!!!
It would mean more $$$$ for them...
 
we cannot boycott Telkom. Its like saying we are gonna boycott all the oil refineries by not using Petrol :(

but we could just set up a server somewhere that sends out like 1000 emails per hour to ICASA telling them that these emails will stop once they get their fat idiotic @rses into gear.
 
thats sounds like a plan, you know i wish there was some way we could bomb our lovely mr president with mails like that as well...

You can easily boycott Telkom. Just dont use their products. This might make your life less pleasant/hurt your busines/etc but nevertheless, the choice is yours to make.

If you are not willing to go through the pain/suffering/whatever, dont claim it cant be done. Many people went to prison for what they believed in, in SA's recent past. If you can't even deny your internet fix, or let yourself/your business suffer financially, you really don't get to say what can and cannot be done

Now we prepare to get screwed ! Let's face it, most people on this forum likes to complain but in the end will happily fork out a few hundred $$$ for crappy ADSL. There is just not enough activists like debbie2 and the few others. To be honest I don't think the kind of people that hang around in forums are the type that would march to telscum HQ and kick some ass, rather the opposite. And frankly I think local call costs are a much bigger barrier to economic growth than anything else (like ADSL). But it's been pretty much proven already that we are helpless against telkom and more importanlty the useless DoC.
 
JStrike, how would you propose that businesses such as kalahari.net or outsurance boycott Telkom? And how would activists such as Debbie2 communicate their message without Telkom?

So which is it, RolanD? Are we helpless or are we apathetic?!

Not that easy if you have web development work to do. At some stage you might want to upload some things to get paid :D

yes, some people can afford to ditch their Telkom products. But what about those who HAVE to work with it? Well, i guess i could simply FedEx or DHL it to the client each time i make a change :( will work out cheaper than Telkom anyway.
 
If kalahari.net feel that it is such a massive thing, such as many here feel, they would shut down the company in protest. But they clearly dont.

As for activists, well, debbie2 is one of the few that actually do anything. Yet activism has never needed the trappings of technology. They make it much, much easier, true, but it is not required and never has been
 
eye_suc : I do web-development. I, however dont have such a major issue with telkom that I would inconvienece my life.

I do have the possibility of leaving my company, and starting a very puplic hunger strike. But I dont care enough to do that. I do have the option however.
 
Dail-up costs (for a thirty day month) connecting every night, and the whole weekend (giving you 384 hours online) will set you back R357.50! Not too bad! That way you can still upload sites, and do your online work. And, there's no cap, and very little shaping! :D

@JStrike: you don't have such a major issue with teklom? :eek: Well, I do! Why increase their pofit when it could have gone into your bank account???? I have my own business as well, also including web design, and am happily using dail-up till teklom starts charging reasonable prices. And I've told them that numerous times already, actually, every time they phone to promote their crappy service! ;)
