We want to change our current network from Telkom frame-relay to a adsl/mpls/diginet solution we have got quotes from both parties involved and as you know it took Telkom 4 tries to get a quote that was even close to IS but "The powers that be" have asked me to come up with a few reason why we should move our network to IS and not stay with Telkom
this ia what I have :
Telkom are known for not being a service driven organization . This is qualified in that almost every person you come into contact with has had a bad experience with Telkom and the only reason they ( Telkom ) own the market is based on their monopolistic status . Their latter bullying of the communications sector has left a bad taste in most entities mouths .
Would you consider placing your mission critical business needs / functions / applications , in the hands of an organization that is known for not coming back to a client when support and administrative issues are raised .
Telkom have undergone massive change ( 3000 retrenchments ) , despite a 1 billion net profit report on their last annual financials – this has created a cloud over the Telkom Staff, further impacting on their already shaky service levels .
Telkom will only be able to offer Telkom Services which up and until a 8 months ago was all that was on offer , however VOIP is now legal and the SNO ( Second Network Operator ) has been confirmed and the latter ( including other SP’s eg. Sentech ) will now offer network infrastructure . This means , SDK will want an organization who’s interest is providing a service based on best of breed infrastructure and not limited to one carrier . The latter is a very successful model predominantly used in the USA and Europe .
Telkom , based on it’s past and quasi governmental mindset is known to (1) have accounts issues that never seem to get resolved ; (2) terrible at providing utilization reports ( and any other reports for that matter ) on a clients links and VPN’s ; (3) slow to resolve technical issues ; (4) not proactive in finding Solutions to innovate and improve a clients communications , ie. Telkom bring in ADSL as a medium and IS are the pioneers in introducing uncapped ADSL with static IP’s , ADSL in a VPN format etc. Obviously Telkom introduced uncapped ADSL and an ADSL VPN Offering after IS had .
The primary issue is around the fact that Telkom have not had the SA Corporate and Consumer Market’s best interest at heart , in that inflated infrastructural and call costs have been allowed to prevail for so long . Economists and business analysts have been baying for deregulation within the SA Communications Sector for many years , not to mention the sentiment of the entire corporate market .
I was hoping I could get other reasons from the people here
