Is it a good idea to buy an iphone 4 from overseas?

Hi guys!

I need some info please. I have some family in Canada who are coming down in the next month and they have offered to bring down an iPhone 4 for me. Its costs about R4500 there without any network!

This is a good deal according to my research, the only thing I am concerned about is if it breaks. I know apple SA will not want to fix it so is it possible to get this fixed here at a not so expensive price?

Also do you think its a good idea to get it overseas or should I pay the full amount here and know I have the warranty?

Well whats likely to go wrong?

If you drop the phone, warranty wouldn't cover it anyways..And it would cost you the price difference (+- 2k) over here for front and back replacement worst case.

If there's water damage to the phone, warranty wouldn't cover that either..

If anything else goes wrong which is unlikely in my opinion, then there are local repair shops who will fix it for you and it would likely be less than the price difference of +-R2k.

So I say go for it if it's definitely factory unlocked i.e. not locked to any network

There is no official "Apple SA" btw.
 
I bought my iphone4 in HK for a lot less than they sell it here. Warranty is a risk, but you do end up saving a few thousand.
 
Hey guys. I'm interested in a similar question. Got a pleasant surprise from the taxman recently (nice refund :-)), and decided to finally plunk down some money for an iPhone4. Yay. But I don't have anyone who can physically bring it to me, will have to buy online. a) is that safe?, b) is it worth it, even if I get slapped with import duty and VAT?, and c) which online retailer would you recommend?
 
Don't worry about warranties here in SA. MTN or Vodacom don't actually fix the phone, they charge your insurance company R4000 then replace the entire phone. Just use someone like iFix for repairs.
