I really believe that the way to fight this mess is to make as many of the public aware of what is happening with Telkom as possible.
The average person out there has been fooled into thinking 3 gigs (or even 1!) is enough, and is cheap.
They need to know that listening to online music/radio is possible, downloading music/videos, getting pc updates, running websites, playing games, watching live content and all the other things are possible, but restricted by Telkom.
They need to know that businesses will suffer, and so will education.
They mainly need to know how pitiful our speeds are, what a hard-cap means, and how little 3 gigs is.

Short of a (costly) newspaper ad, the only way I can think to do this is by a decent email telling the facts that can be distributed. We all know how fast a joke can go around the whole country, so a well thought-out email could reach hundreds of thousands of people. If just 5% take note, we have a strong following.

I am looking for someone who can write better than me (I find it hard not to get abusive about Telkom) to write a good email containing all the facts, with no slander or exaggerations. Just the bare facts (with emphasis on the fact that using the internet for everything it offers is NOT abuse) and explaining how 30 gig accounts are now so much more. Will have to explain the damage this new pricing will cause, and how backwards we are compared to even the most basic of 3rd world countries.

Basically a summary of everything we already know. Then we copy it, and title it "The truth about Telkom and ADSL" and start forwarding it. If everyone forwards to 10 people..well you know how these things spread. A couple of execs and newspapers thrown in there..and we have a decent campaign. Nothing that isn't fact..and we can't be criticised for slander.

We can't do this without the general public knowing what is happening. Refer ppl here and to hellkom and antitrust in the email.

Can't tell you how many ppl I have spoken to who think a 1gig account for R150 sounds great. They just need to know what that means.

Anyone wanna summarise everything and them we can edit it until we have a workable email?
Gotta be succinct, and fairly polite. Has to appeal to the average person, and be understandable. Keep the "tech" stuff to a minimum.

Holding thumbs someone sees the merit in this. Am sure there will be enough ppl who try shoot this idea down in flames, but it is at least a start.

The idea isn't to make Telkom suddenly decide to change everything..it is to make the average person out there (who has no idea myadsl/hellkom exists) think twice about signing up for adsl.
If Telkom sees their new signup rate is slowing down, THEN we might just get something right.
No point trying to reach Telkom. They think we are a radical powerless minority. Change that to a radical MAJORITY and you have something to bargain with. Can it hurt?

Guys... its not only telkom... I teach at a computer centre that uses sentec internet access.... the students cant access any of the southafrican educational sites and most international sites are blocked..... I will be meeting the minister of communications at the Achievers awards this saturday and with some luck I will talk to her... If I win an award... I will also use the opportunity to ask questions the people dont ask... Myadsl is doing its bit but the problem is that most of the people here are already aware of what is going on... can you guys compile a module or tutorial explaining in easy terms what the people dont already know.... Sure...

I definitely agree that the more awareness the better. After all, knowledge is power. As it is there is quite a bit of stink about this, but as far as I am concerned, not enough.

Well then let's put together out own, ban Shell- one eyed - legless lepper with three nipples form Kazakstan midget wrestling federation chain letter and see how far it goes.

Put it out there in the wild, I am sure the gullible public will gobble it up.

Be sure to include a pic of Telkom van that has run over a puppy ....... or bunny.

I think this is a brilliant idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely cunning!!!
Where do we start. Who is good at writing these things???
I'll even help make it look a bit corporate, with some html!!!

Can I save that and start emailing it out?????
Maybe put a heading on the email, like 'Urgent Public Announcement, End of telecommunications in SA!!'

The more ppl that sees that the better. Hellkom put the flyer on their site about 2-3 months ago. I sent it to a couple of my friends, but they didnt pay much attention.. they seem to be happy with their 'fill this in!' and 'forward this or you going to die!' email.

But i guess the point is to print and hand out

To much writing, has to be more concise.

Just a few lines and then a photo of Telkom employee standing over Leigh Mathews body holding holding one of those blue test pnones they use.

Has to be sensational.

Yes..I have read the flyer, and given some out. But it doesn't address the ADSL issue directly, which is what is affecting the public. It doesn't mention what is changing on Nov 1st, and doesn't explain hard capping, what a 3 gig cap means, and why we are getting so much less than the rest of the world. Need to show how our speeds aren't even called broadband overseas, and how using the service you are purchasing is called abuse. Throttling too...and how we are going backwards. This is what we need to write in the email. Fairly simplified. Just need to counter-act what Telkom will be publicising (that they just made ADSL cheaper)
C'mon..someone with all the facts and ability to write it...just do it.
I will make sure if goes out, and goes to plently people.
Someone? I am not good enough with the explainy to do it myself. If someone does the basics, I will edit and complete it. Will include some funny Telkom cartoons too.

Let's get off our butts, stop talking about doing something, and just do it?

Even printed and handed out.. how many people will take the time to read it? I honestly think most people wud rather pay the extra on their phonebill than bothering to think about how they are paying too much or about the people that cant pay for a line

Glock26, the flyer was written from Antitrust and Hellkom's point of view. We tried getting in the hardest hitting facts to grab people's attention. Our flyer is aimed at the average Joe on the street. If we start talking about shaping and caps, we will loose their interest.

Turbo_Aspiration, many people have taken time to read our flyer (I have seen it with my own eyes). We have done a few protests with that same flyer and we have gotten a good response.

Yeah thats good. Thing is most peole are ignorant about most of these things. we take it for granted cos we deal wih it everyday.
You should have something that catches their attention, tthat will make them read it. Like the newspapers do. The headings in the mornings sound terrible, then u go and buy the paper and it is only some blownup version of what really happened.
Maybe have a header like, 'read how Telkom screws the public' or is that to blatant??

Telkom kills infant !

With the newest price increases due on the 1st Nov Telkom will be killing a number of infant businesses that could not operate without internet connectivity nor can they afford it.

For as long as the Internet has been a reality Telkom has been a thorn in the side of Internet users in South Africa.

No longer happy that the South African taxpayers has paid for their infrastructure they have decided that we should pay for it again and filling their warchest for defending their teritory against the SNO.

We need cheaper call costs and Internet access and we need it now. Telkom is strangling the growth of South Africa and having the Government as a major shareholder will mean that change will be slow.

It is official, South Africa ranks in second last position for having the most expensive telecommunications costs.

Change is needed now ! Add your voice and support to bring about change.
