Just seven months ago the new pay channel TopTV was launched to serve those who could not afford the more established pay channel DStv’s offerings.
Starting in a rough patch as people constantly complained of not being able to find it in stores or to find installers, while comparing it to the major pay bouquet, it seems Top TV has conquered the odds.
“The new kids on the block” are raking in subscribers – standing at 200000 to date.
It seems that Minister of Communications Siphiwe Nyanda was right when he said he “had no doubt that TopTV will make history by changing the television landscape for the good of the majority of ordinary South Africans”, as the results now show.
According to a statement, by “Christmas 2010 TopTV subscribers numbers had reached 200000, with a record 50000 activations in December alone. That amounts to 800000 viewers based on an average four viewers per household.”
CEO of TopTV Vino Govender said he was “pleased with these results and I have always believed there was a need for an innovative and affordable Pay TV service in the South African market”.
“Our subscribers confirm this every day. Top TV is so much in sync with the aspirations of modern South Africans that it has been recognized by industry specialists as the fastest growing TV platform around the globe, with monthly growth rates and activations surpassing that of comparable platforms in both India and China,” he said.
It offers more than 60 channels, including BET, Discovery Travel & Living, Fuel TV, MGM and Natura as well as the TopTV flagship channels: Top Movies, Top One, Top Gospel, Top History, Top Learn and Top Crime.
TopTV offers its subscribers a real alternative to the other available television services and is priced at R299 for the full package, including standard installation.
“There might be an additional cost depending on the installation – different bracket, extra cable, etc, but the price has remained the same since the launch.
“There is an Indian bouquet however – with four channels – which is an additional R60 a month, regardless of the package you’re on,” said publicist Melinda Connor.
It seems TopTV is even growing the stable with more channels and hopes to include high definition (HD) and personal video recorder (PVR) options sooner than expected.
Govender said: “2011 will bring new additions to the TopTV offering, including in particular a sports channel (by September), new HD channels (at no extra subscription fee, which will come in about a year from now) and an HD PVR.”
