So my friend has a new PC [AMD 64 4400+ X2, Geforce 7800GTX, 2GB RAM etc] and he wants to upgrade from Windows XP Pro to Win XP Pro 64-bit. Are there any dealers that have that offer as he really doesn't want to fork out +-R800 for just 64-bit functionality.

If he can afford such a setup the R800 for OS should be peanuts

i heard smthing smwhere, that when u buy a 64-bit amd u can get 64-bit windows free if u hav 32-bit xp, or smthing like that, cant remember where i read it tho, might not be tru tho
There is no easy upgrade from 32bit XP to 64bit XP. Also note that most hardware will require the 64bit drivers even if run under the 32bit enviroment.

Thats correct to go from Windows 32 bit to 64 bit you will need to reinstall. All we do is give you the 64Bit CD at the upgrade price. Then you a 32 bit CD and 64 Bit

64bit would be cool, but there's still too muck kuk with the driver's, cuz they cant be run in 32bit mode, but if he looks around on the web, and can find all of his drivers in 64bit format, then go ahead and 'upgrade', but otherwise just chill with 32bit win XP, it wont hurt u...to much:D

Bollocks, how can you run 64Bit drivers on a 32Bit OS? The OS is the be-all-and-end-all when it comes to what drivers you use.

you need diff drivers for 32 bit and 64 bit . Its different code that needs to be written.

Basically 64Bit has twice the adressing capabilities as 32Bit.

64bit XP can run 32bit applications in a simulated 32bit environment. If you loaded 64bit XP and installed your sentech modem, it will not work because the drivers are for the 32bit system. You will require the 64bit drivers even though the software remains 32bit.
If you do some reading up, you'll read that everywhere

No!
32 bit can can address 2 to the power of 32 , 64 bit can address 2 to the power of 64.
Beeeeeeegg difference :D

Yeah, yeah, I was just making a point.
64Bit is backward compatible with 32Bit apps, not 32Bit drivers, you certainly cannot run 64Bit drivers on a 32Bit system.
I've been through installing Longhorn and XP64, both suck and caused my system to run crappy, randon reboots/system hangs.

I did and I have and I know;)
You can run 32Bit software on the 64Bit OS however you cannot run 32Bit drivers on the 64Bit OS.
The person I was correcting said that you can run 64Bit drivers on a 32Bit OS. Very wrong.
I was the person you were trying to correct and if you read it again you'll see what I wrote. You assumed I was referring to a stand alone 32bit XP installation. I was referring to the 64bit install with the 32bit sub-environment. Big difference.

[DOH]
My humblest apologies, the above quote led me to believe that the 32Bit environemt you were trying to run 64Bit drivers under would be the OS in which case it would not work.
Stupid me I guess
