You can always add a few km's to your trip and stay in Hogsback.
The next obvious choice would be to stay in Fort Beaufort.

If you were to make a weekend of it, then you will find some awesome panoramic photo opportunities in the Hogsback Mountains. It really is a beautiful area.

Never been there and it looks nice but I can only go up on the Monday. If I'm lucky I'll be in EL (wow - never thought that sentence would be penned by me

Hey B. I actually lived in Fort Beaufort as a child. I know it's quite a distance from Alice I think. My dad used to teach at Fort Hare as well. I can give you my dad's contact details if you'd like to phone him up. He can possibly organize lodging for you near the campus.
Hogsback is about 10km from Alice. Really beautiful area. Good luck with the work dude.
There are quite a few good guest houses in Bunkershill (elite suburb) which is pretty accessible to the sporting places without staying in scummy areas.
Here's a list http://www.sa-venues.com/accommodation/eastlondon.php of some of the places. Don't go for one in Gonubie unless you want to experience EL's version of rush-hour traffic.

Thanks Voicy - you say Bunkershill is close to the cricket ground?
Close enough to walk.
Have a looksee at Arum guest house. It's in the same road ( John Bailey Rd.) as the cricket ground parking. It's also on a hill overlooking the cricket grounds.

Whahaha ... Alice isn't rural by EC standards! Not by any stretch of the imagination. Try Bizana / Engcobo / Mt Fletcher. But yeah, it's not a kief place either.
After receiving conflicting advice from my 2 gps devices I ended up heading into really rural territory. Some of the roads I was sent down were more dirt track than roads and best suited to 4x4 not hatchback!

I've been told the coastal route is quicker than taking the N2 the whole way - any thoughts?
I've got to head back to PE Saturday for a birthday party followed by a Bay United match in the afternoon - I'm not sure if I'm ever going to get a chance to explore the area.

Yeah dude, don't drive the KWT - Peddie route.
From Slummies, take the R72 through Port alfred and rejoin the N2 by the Nanaga farm stall interchange.

Fully agree. Be extra vigilant on the section between the Nanaga turn-off and Alexandria; single lane and full of idiots overtaking on blind rises and corners.
