What are you WILLING to pay for ADSL...

Realistically, what do you guys think about the following:

1) What do you want to pay for ADSL?
2) What speads should you get for your money?
3) What cap, if any, would be acceptable to you?

Would be interesting to hear the opinions...
 
Price: anything under R350
Speed: anything over 1.5Mbit p/s
Cap: anything over 50Gb

anything but Telkom :rolleyes:
 
I would be willing to pay R300-R400 / month in total (including ISP and Telkom line rental -- I can't believe the amounts Telkom charge for line rental can be justifed on a cost basis).

Speed should be at least 2MB - this is pretty standard in other parts of the world now, so the technology is tried and tested -- and any way we are paying s**t loads for line rental (which I assume covers the cost of the equiment in the exchange so we should be getting 2MB at least)

Cap should be around 50GB / month - but I realise it is probably not practical to have that much access to internation traffic because of lack of bandwidth (and I'm paying for the bandwidth, so I'll use it how I please - so absolutely no shaping!)

As a side note, what would be nice is a service that is uncapped between say 9PM - 7AM i.e. it doesn't count toward your total cap. But then again, don't want to be giving Telkom an ideas here so will stop at that :)

Cheap ADSL like cheap cell phone calls, cheap cars, cheap petrol, cheap medical will never be a reality in South Africa but if we can just get it down to something fair it would be a start.

Sounds like thats what telkom's trying to find out to. They are making it worse and worse in order to answer that question. It seems we are more willing than most people think :(
 
Only to pay for ISP cost, not Telkom rental - that has to fall away altogether - but of course Telkom can't expect the ISP's to foot that cost too.

...to be very honest, based on the level of service and connectivity I have been receiving on my ADSL line the last few months, they should be paying me! :D

I reckon 512k should be the baseline speed, stepping up to 1M, 2M and 4M speeds
- 512k downstream, 50GB, unshaped = R299.00
- 1M downstream, 50GB, unshaped = R369.00
- 2M downstream, 50GB, unshaped = R429.00
- 4M downstream, 50GB, unshaped = R499.00

- 512k downstream, 100GB, unshaped = R499.00
- 1M downstream, 100GB, unshaped = R599.00

(there should be no line rental for ADSL, as it is a seperate charge on the account anyway)

Just my 2 cents worth... :)

R200 - R300 once of installation / connection fee.
Once off upgrade fee to move to higher speed.
No line rental - its absurd that Telscum still charges this.

Typical 1mbit down / 384kbit up:

R100 10GB
R200 20GB
R300 30GB
R400 40GB etc.

To be realistic, we are at the wrong side of the world for hyper speed broadband and SAT-3 needs an upgrade if we want European or USA like speeds. Satellite has to much lag.

SAT-3 has over 120Gbps capacity, its just very, very underutilised at the moment as Telkom wants a rapid ROI so they are ripping the arse out of prices. SAT-3 and SAFE are more than enough for starters, there's a combined total of 250Gbps on both pipes.. not that we have access to all that, but Telkom has access to a larger portion than the rest of the countries. Depends on how much of the fibre is lit or not but by all accounts Telkom is hardly making a dent in these connections. A total waste of technology, and they are lying under the water wasting away.. money is being spent on maintenance, landing points, interconnection, you name it - but they are overcharging by a massive amount so there is no need to use any more of the cable than they are now as their wallets are swelling quite happily, even at the expense of a country's ability to compete internationally. We cannot rely on gold and agriculture exports forever but the people 'in charge' (I use this term loosely) don't think of that.
 
Honestly I wouldnt mind paying between R500 - R1000 a month for everything (rental/isp/line) but with no cap and no shaping
 
I don't think the question should be what are 'we' (the early adoptors, alpha geeks, etc) are willing to pay but rather what would be affordable for the majority of people in this country to pay. I currently pay +/- R500 for ADSL but how may people can afford that? The price needs to come down to something like 1 or 2% of the average household income to really see massive broadband adoption, which should be our goal.
