My SOHO has an ISDN (2a?) line with 2 phone numbers, say 001 and 002, which terminate on a non-Telkom PABX.

We also have a direct line, 003, which terminates in one office.

I want to cancel the ISDN, give up number 002 and have 003 added to the switchboard in the place of 002. Keep phone number 001. All this is in preparation for replacing the switchboard with an Asterisk solution in due course.

Sounds elementary to me but this is where things stand today:

Filled in application for all the above and submitted it at a Telkom customer care center. Heard nothing, phoned and was told (gleefully) by Telkom that I had to get the switchboard provider to come out, they had to fill in forms and we had to fill in forms, then the switchboard provider would negotiate with Telkom about the project. When I suggested to Telkom that it sounded like something that I could do myself (at least parts of it) I was told that unless I was certified by ICASA (which I am not, of course), I was not allowed to touch anything myself (more glee from u know who).

So on to my switchboard provider. My switchboard (non-Telkom) was paid for in cash and I don’t have a service agreement so the provider is dragging heels heavily. Keeps on saying they will get back to me, real soon but nothing happens!

I am not looking for favours or freebees and am prepared to pay what it takes but is there someone out there who could do it for me (legally, of course)? I am based in Pretoria (eastern suburbs). Please PM me if you think you can help.

Why don't you keep the ISDN? You can connect the BRI to Asterisk and have the benefit of caller id.

It is a pain, once lines are flagged as being on a PABX, you can't even report them out of order yourself. It could be worth trying to "disconnected" the lines from the PABX. ie: send Telkom a letter saying your having your pabx removed and just want to run the lines on their own.

This sorta thing really bugs me!!!

When they treat the customers like absolute idiots and tell them that you need a techie for this cause you are stupid and you probably break something... meanwhile telkom techie comes to visit and i have to TEACH him how to do his job cause i know more about the technology than he does.

Wake up Telkom - this is the infomation era... remember your whole download life blurb, well lots of us are doing that and we're way more informed than you think!!

Thanks, good ideas. Will try.
