South African ADSL Usage breaks the 100 000 user barrier

Uh....The amount of ADSL user doubled in the last 8 months. That is growth of 100%, not 50%
Also not that well written an article. Not sure which publication it comes from though.

LOL, the only penetration that is REALLY happening is Telkom "penetrating" more peoples wallets.

Well, at least due to more people having it, this sites numbers may grow and maybe prices will soon drop a bit.

more people have taken it up because of the low cost recently .. but as from 1 November ( which most ppl don't seem to know about) .. that is surely going to change ... I give it a month before that number drops to at least half :)

Anywayz, I'm not part of their statistics! :p If they drop the cost to acceptable levels, compareable with international trends, I'll join, and they can add me to the stats, but not before that!
 
lol - at that rate of growth I'm surprised they managed to break through anything instead of bounding off. Of course who's to say they growth will continue after the 31st of October.

I know what you mean but SA has never really experienced low cost access. You always have to add the line rental into any figures and at over r880 for a 1mb line with the 30gb package we were still getting jacked.

Shouldn't we get another price drop according to Telscum's master plan of "economies of scale"?

A price reduction is the only real way to ensure better uptake of ADSL. Countries like India have caught on to this and they now plan to slash broadband tariffs by 50 percent in an effort to increase market penetration.

1. The waiting period for an ADSL line deter potential clients.
2. Lack of availability in certain areas provides a good handbrake to broadband growth in South Africa.
3. Exhorbitant prices allow ADSL to be for a certain group of people.
4. Broadband with no speed [Telkom version of ADSL]
 
it does go to show that a price decrease does help penetration.
i for one want to see more people taking up broadband... seems to have a positive affect on the price
 
It's starting to feel like a give and take situation.

Every time Telkom are forced to make a consession such as giving price cuts (because lets face it without all the complaints and consumer action ADSL would probably cost in excess of R1k per months by now :(), they find some way to degrade the service as if to take back the bit of ground we made up when compared to international standards.

Then they use the argument of "...but BT have 15GB caps on their service" while disregarding the fact that BT and other service providers in Europe do actually offer other packages too, for people with greater needs. It's also just too convenient that they forget to mention the price charged for said services.

Amazing how they keep insisting on not being compared to developed countries but then do it themselves (very selectively of course) when it suits them.

*sigh* I'm tired of this nonsense.

slow, all 30 gb caps trying to make up for next month. Just hope telkom monitoring so they can plan for future. What a test time they have?
ps. My system is crawling. Maybe Telkom really does have bandwidth problems?
 
From today onwards the headline should read "South African ADSL Usage breaks the 1000 user barrier thanks to Telscum and their high prices".

Only at Telkom Towers (Fawlty Towers). The rest is OK. Try using an old telephone line for direct connection to your neighbour's PC. I got 11Mbps over a distance of 207 metres. Maybe we should do that and fit solar-powered repeaters every 200 metres and bypass the exchanges illegally.

Hang Telkom high!

Caroper - A month ago, ADSL accounts(Telkom monitor all accounts via IPC even IS/UUNET) reach just over 120k.

I suspect 100k was hit much longer ago.
