A friend of mine has received a few harassing calls, the caller obviously knows who she is, and is messing with her mind.

Does anybody know how to find out what the private number is? Her number is MTN.

I was reading other threads, and saw alot of them mentioned getting a case number first, but that was back in 2008. How is it done now in 2011?

i read ''her''& not so nice calls. i assume the person calling is speaking quite :erm:

if that's the case there are a few pointers i can give that she can say. they're not appropriate to mention here.

as far as getting the number. the SP wont hand over the number without a court order.

If you post your friend's number here, we might be able to help... :D

Have to go to cops and open a case of harassment. They investigate, find the person and make a case of harassmsnet agains him. Goes to court from there and can be a long costly story and the guy can be sent to jail or fined. I had the same problem, but had no clue who it was. I called Vodacom and they asked me to go to the cops - the cops explained the rest... needless to say I didnt bother.

Or you can go to intertel.co.za and see their caller unmasking service. Basically, from what I understand, when a private number calls her, the call gets rerouted to them and they unblock it.

Another thing if you find the number and want to block calls from it I think CellC has a product for that

Your friend can simply choose not to answer calls from "private number". Why do people feel obliged to answer calls on their cellphones come hell or high water? Personally I never answer any calls on my cellphone from private numbers or from numbers that aren't in my contact list. If it's important they'll leave a message. This means I have the luxury of never having to deal with sales or marketing calls.

I cannot simply ignore private number calls, because I'm on call from my work and therefore have to. So that may not be an option for this lady either. And yeah, that means I've got a lot of practice putting my phone on mute and letting those sales and marketing callers figure it out and drop the call.

Hey all thanks for all the replies!

Please pm me that info that you can't post here...

Unfortunately my dear friend doesn't seem to be able to ignore private numbers... which is what I mostly do, especially after hours.
Awhile ago I heard about a new LAW or something being implemented, that would prevent people from using private numbers, or just make it easy for somebody to find out who a private number was, if they took the time to follow up (without going to the cops)

Does your friend have a smartphone running Android or Symbian? There are quite few apps around that will automatically block calls from private and unknown numbers.

still till now i cant reveal a call wit hidin caller-ID. please guy can u help?

Just a snippet. My sons vespa was stolen .. I found it advertised on Gumtree. I phoned was given the run around to make sure I was a bona fide wannabe buyer, and then was given another number to call the mother of the "owner" (thief). I went straight to Sea Point police. Told them vespa was in Mitchells Plain and here is the phone number. Please trace and go and get the Vespa. They refused saying it will take a lot of red tape. I must go and find it...a middle aged woman...then get back to them. They couldnt trace the address. They had the ad, the cell number. When i called the thief again they said sorry sold. I think that THEY traced my number to Sea Point and put 2 and 2 together. Very fed up!!
