LAN connection dropping...

Hi guys,

I use a D-Link 504T (or something like that), I've got two pc's connected to it. Problem is on both pc's I'm getting the "LAN is now connected" box popping up every now and again, (even while you're surfing or downloading mail) as if you quickly unplugged and re-plugged the LAN connection...it's causing me to lose connections to ie the WOW server etc...it doesn't happen to the two pc's simultaneously either.

Sometimes I'd lose my connection, but my wife would still be connected and vice versa...Sometimes my TS/Skype would start clipping or disconnect, hit ALT+Tab back to desktop and theres the little "LAN is now connected" bubble floating in the background...

The second problem is it seems the router often disconnects completely, the ADSL-link light is still on (so its not an exchange problem)...requiring me to unplug the power, wait 2 minutes and then switch it back on...only then will I be able to reconnect...

How does it sound to you guys - could the router be at fault or is there a problem with my line or something? I've gone the usual routes and they did tests etc and the only thing that works is for me to switch the power off and back on. When I still had the Marconi one from Telkom I almost never had to reboot the modem...I'm considering going back to the Marconi...even though it's over-priced to hell...

Any ideas? Alternatives?

Try updating your NIC driver and also forcing 100MB/Full if your router supports that.
 
What motherboards are in those machines, I know for instance that some Nvidia Intel chipset mobo's have dodgy lan ports.
 
Mine is ABIT MAX III (AMD 64), latest drivers installed, the wife's pc is MSI mobo (AMD) (don't know which model) also latest and greatest drivers installed.

JUGGY:

"forcing 100MB/Full" - uhmmm how do I do that? me n00b...:o
 
How often is it dropping? I'm not 100% familiar with ADSL as I don't have yet, but could it be related to Telskum's session resets? When did this problem start occuring?
 
It's really been like this ever since I've had this router...before that I had a Marconi and it was 100% fine...

It's VERY intermittend...it will run for days on end no problem and then suddenly start disconnecting/reconnecting...this will last for 5 minutes and then it will be fine again...then my wife will start complaining about disconnections...<sigh!>

And then the router will just drop the entire ADSL connection (light still on everything cool) and refuse to reconnect unless I reboot the router...
 
which area are you in? I have the same router model and found that for the last 2 weeks it does just this - turned out to be the DSLAM at our Randburg exchange that was knackered - Telkom replaced it and all is fine now...
 
I had the same problem!

Just save yourself a lot of trouble and get new cables and boots and plugs. I promise this solves the problem.

If one of the core cables is damaged, it does connect but only for a while. As soon as data goes through the cable it bombs out and drops the connection. I've seen this lots.

Go and buy cables that use the white covering cat5e. I've had problems with "gigacore" and the cables that are shielded with tin foil.

What i do recommend is to take that cable to a pc shop and let them test it with a lan tester.

I bet you thats the problem, not drivers or anything like that!
 
Daysleepers suggestions are sound. Also sheck to see if there is a firmware update and what it fixes for the router.
 
I have the same with a Linksys router. Replacing cables could help (from the modem to the router), but all the conenctions from the router is wiereless.

Still dropping the connection intermittedly. Most of the times it re-connections within a few seconds. Sometimes it does not re-connect - the connections shows as excellent, but it does not provide and IP and results in a "limited" connection and noting else than a router reboot sorts that out.
