My question is around point 2 - please define 'spicyness' ?

I mixed pepper, cayenne pepper and some chilli aromat. Let's see what comes out !

That sounds about right ;)

Chilli powder & red pepper will also do.

Aromat - correct me if I am wrong, I think Aromat contains MSG or is that just the plain Aromat. Try not to consume too much.

This whole MSG thing has been ripped out of proportion liek most things the media get hold of. Glutamic acid is found naturally in nature/food. Normal consumption of the stuff is not going to do anything to you.
Some people might be sensitive to MSG, just like other people are sensitive to other things.

I love aromat on chips & eggs but if I have those once a week it's a lot so I'll continue consuming it.

Ponder, do you know what is the alleged side-effect or risk of consuming too much MSG (if that is even posible) ?

I honestly don't know but reading the links below indicates they can't actually prove anything. The one person in a study that got ill (self identified msg sensitive individual) actually got a placebo :D

When I was a kid I literally ate this stuff out of the shaker. If it was bad for you they would have banned it by now in conjunctions with fruit, veg & meat it occurs naturally in.

I think DJ had a whole post about MSGs some time back and it being harmless.

I make my own biltong and my sister in law wont allow any of her family to eat the biltong I make as it contains MSG amongst other preservatives. Oh well it means more biltong for me. Most foods are made with preservatives so as to prolong their shelf life. I guess its accurate to assume if these preservatives were bad for you most of us would at least experience some sort of side effects.

Well then she must stop feading them a lot of natural things, natural Beef contains 33mg/100g Free glutamate & 2846mg/100g Protein glutamate. That's without you putting any msgs on to it.

Meat, dairy, fruit & veg all contain it, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamic_acid_(flavor)#Concentration_in_foods

Maybe you should forward that to her and see if she starts starving the family :D

I sent her the wikipedia link, she mentioned that Aromat is now made without MSG! She also mentioned that another reason she avoids giving it to the kids is because the one child is asthmatic and has a attack whenever she has had Aromat.

Sounds to me like an allergy.

I wonder if it's the MSG or maybe some other component (preservatives etc) in Aromat that causes it? Sometimes you buy food and it already has MSG in it that you can't see unlike the chips from Steers etc which is pretty obvious.

Anyway, hopefully the kid outgrows it which is about a 50/50 thing.
