Where can i find a decently price Netgear DG834G

i have read somewhere that this router is very resilient to low SNR and maintains sync better than other routers. I have checked around and found local online store selling one for 700 bucks.

does anybody know where i may be bale to get my hands on one of these? Second hand is fine by me :-)
 
I would love to see where you read that. IMO the Netgear modems are the worst that you can get, but the old ones might still be OK.

I would suggest that you try and borrow an ADSL modem first before buying one and ending up with an even worse ADSL modem than you currently have (Belkin N150).

So far I've seen that the Siemens Gigaset SX762 performed exceptionally well - even better than my favorite: D-Link DSL-2500U - but the SX762 costs a fortune.
Apparently the TP-Link modems are also reasonably good.

For a start you can also try switching between ADSL2+ and D.Gmt modulation to see if that doesn't improve things too.
You want an SNR value of 12dB or higher for both your upload & download. 6dB is the minimum required to even establish a connection.
The dB scale isn't linear, so 12dB SNR margin is quite a lot better than 6dB.

It would've been awesome if someone can actually benchmark all the ADSL modems like they benchmark/review graphics cards :D

I have a netgear DG834GT router and its served me very very well for almost 4 / 5 years. Its now getting to a point where I think it might be on its way out (needs a reboot every now and again, and the wifi dies after a few weeks), but from all the online posts I have been reading, the newer netgear models are a bit dodgy.

I have the following router in mind and as soon as I can find a reseller in South Africa that can order me one, I will be taking the leap into the linksys camp :

I heard the early linksys routers did not have a great reputation, but since they joined the Cisco camp, their routers are really excellent. They are effectively running Cisco firmware now.
Any comments from Linksys owners ? Known annoyances and bugs ?

I have a DG 834GT. Would never touch Netgear agin.
Within the warranty period I had it replaced twice. The first died completely and the second could not keep connected to the internet.

The one I have now has lasted a few years though. It's given trouble in the past, with devices losing connection and the only way to connect them again was to reset the router. Doesn't seem to be a problem with the latest firmware, although the fact that it took them several years is not acceptable.

Their wireless adapters come with crap software that refuses to work on my Windows 7 machine, works on on XP but it's still crap. My Linksys adapter on the other hand just plugs in and works.

In my experience Netgear is s**t and should just die.

It was in a sublink somewhere whicih further explained SNR.

I cant remember what ny SNR used to be before the major storm that stuffed up my line, but i DO know that my downstream was rock solid at 6144. Im pretty sure SNR was around 12-16. But right now, i'm lucky if it stays at 6. I have seen it drop to 4 (and still remain connected) but i guess that when it keeps dipping so low its causing the line to constantly drop.

what could be causing such an abysmally low SNR? surely the fact that it changed overnight after major storm must indicate line damage somewhere? But why does telskum insist the line is fine (despite it dropping sync pretty much avery 2-5 minutes)
 
If bad weather affects your SNR, then you should call out the Telkom technicians during that time, because they won't be able to find any faults when the weather is great and your SNR is normal.
 
I have to admit that while I was a big Netgear fan for a long while I have started changing over to other brands. I have a DG834GT and after a few years it now drops wireless, has a problem assigning IP to my new router (using Netgear as a modem for now).

There are better products out there.

Why do you want a DG834G? It's only 54Mbs and the GT is 108 Mbs. Try go for a Wireless N router if you can - much faster wireless speeds!
 
i've got a Belkin N150 and im trying to work out if changing it will help my line either stabilize at a low SNR, or improve my overall router stats in some way
 
I changed from 2 DG834G's and 2 those EoP wall power things to having just 1 tp-link ultimate router. The EoP was used because the signal from the first DG834 wasn't good enough to reach so had the 2nd DG834G. Replaced the first one with the tp-link and didn't need the rest and the signal was stronger from the "far" tp-link than it ever was from the second/closer DG834G...
