Telkom take their beating at the MyADSL Broadband Conference

Was there are direst question as to why do we have to pay about 15 times more than 90% of the other countries for 30 Gigs ADSL account (which is considered normal usage by international standards) and WHEN is Telkom going to bring their prices down at least 10 times so we can (more or less) be internationally competitive?

Lip service.

We say and Telkom deny without real solution = end result Telkom hands you your new and improved vaseline intensive care with lanolin.

Vermaak bantered around price differences of R400 for an overseas streaming service in comparison to R40 000 for that same service in South Africa.
Did Vermaak go into any detail as to how he derived these figures and why it costs R40K for that service here? Is our network made of gold or something?

The network is not made of gold, but some of the operators are digging (raping us) for it...

Although I can not confirm R40k, we have had a very similar experience:

Due to similar hosting problems our company had to move hosting from UUNET to an international server. The cost cut was from R4000+pm (R10k on some months) to R317pm (got the SMS this morning)

The main cost component on the UUNET server was traffic. It comprised 90% of our monthly bill. Furthermore the UUNET hosted server had a Bandwidth cap of 2GB. If your usage exceeded 2GB a penalty charge would be added per MB. Our current server is 10GB and if you exceed it the 'penalty' is 10% of UUNET's.

When we canceled the account, the UUNET account manager asked the question why we are canceling (if there is anything he can do to change our mind). When I stated that the only reason we are moving is to cut the high bandwidth cost, he stated that unfortunately there is nothing to be done on that front, due to the high input costs they pay (Telkom) for bandwidth.

This is my point.
We all agree the high cost of bandwidth is affecting the hosting industry / IT/ internet in general in this country. For +-R50pm you can get 5 gigs storage / 10 gigs traffic per day, easy. To get that same service in SA you either have to be a Drug Lord or a Telkom exec to afford it.
Webhost or servers it all boils down to bandwidth costs.
So the question needs to be asked as to why there is this massive difference in costs and that needs to be answered in full with a justification by Telkom or their siamese twin Saix.
R400 <-----> R40 000 doesnt add up, no matter how vast and seperated we are in this country, even with a fleet of BMW's thrown in, surely.

According to Telkom's technical rep that was there, the main problems are peering (internationally) and DSLAM->local fiber ring (locally) as the bottlenecks. Anyone know where to find info on their peering costs to overseas networks? I mean, if it's this expensive for the peering of 0.87% of the fiberoptic cable's capacity, what kind of deal are they negotiating? Also, WTF is wrong with their network if their DSLAMs can't get sufficient bandwidth to the backbone?

I am sorry to say but whenever I hear Telkom saying that the ISP's now make their bandwidth apportioning and IP reset decisions I cringe! Telkom did that to bypass ICASA! There is no other reason...

They are sneaky, slimey bastards!

It's all telkom lies and I bet you that peering pricing info is a well kept secret at telkom. The whole argument about peering cost to overseas is a lie, why can Australia(a country further away from anything than we are) have broadband at better prices. I'm sure they don't have to struggle with a pathetic 3gb!

did any one directly ask them why they are gready pigs who care nothing for there users and the country ?

a bit off topic

you pay R317 (about $50.00) for 10 Gigs?

that's still too expensive by international standards, I host on three overseas hosts and pay $1.00 a gig (the most expensive) to $0.30 (the cheapest), as from this year I have received couple of offers for dedicated hosts for less than $100.00 per month for 1000 Gigs or more

... makes me want to cry all over again. Telkom really need to somehow be held accountable for the prices they charge. God send competition soon. If I charge 150 000 for a web site and a competitor charges 50 000, which do you think would be chosen? If I was the only developer in the country and charged 150 000, while other countries charged 15c, I'd expect there to be some confusion.

Where, who? c'mon - tell us.:) :)

According to Victor Strydom, senior manager for product development at Telkom, under the new billing system the resetting of IP addresses are now the jurisdiction of the ISP
Though because of the crappy billing system Telkom uses they can only find out how much bandwidth has been used on that account after the account has disconnected. So in effect Telkom are forcing ISP's to disconnect*, or else they shoot themselves in the foot with the likelyhood of abuse on the account?

So what is the difference??? The wording is different and way it happens is different but its still the same thing is it not? Its the same as this..
Strydom stated that Telkom Internet are completely separate from his division and that he had no idea what their policy was on the issue.
That is exactly the same as the statement made where it was said that SAIX was different to telkom and they could not control what SAIX did?

Sorry but I dont believe a single word those two said and I actually dont think they "were committed to engaging with delegates on some of the intricacies of their ADSL service." All they did was take old statements and twist them around to make it seem like something new. Read the news articles from 3-4 months ago on MYADSL and you'll see its all been said before and nothing new was gained.. So what did these two guys actually help then????

* Just thought of something.. what if that account NEVER disconnects. Can telkom ever charge the ISP granted its not likely to happen, but still???
