best 5.1 sound card

Asus xonar seems to be the best on the market right now, but can set you back ±R2000

edit: though they do have a couple versions from R700 up

If memory serves the asus xonar was better audio quality, creative was better with games, not in terms of sound quality, but the pc's performace was a frame or 3 faster with the creative card. They are both very decent cards i just wont support creative cause of what they did with there drivers and vista, basically their cards became redundant and they didnt write new drivers. forcing audigy card oweners to have to buy x-fi cards (disghusting) So im putting my money into asus for now.
 
ok so looks like Asus have a loooong list of PCI and PCI-X cards available

I just wanna be able to "tick all the boxes" in the sound options of my games and enjoy DTS on movies and quite honestly my on-board sound sucks ass!

reccommend a decent entry model please? and does it matter if I go PCI or PCI-X ?

I really cant remember exactly whats what, but the DG sets off some warning. Google some reviews for the 3 cheapest Asus Xonars and take it from there. I suspect you'll rather want to go for the DX or D1
 
yeah seems the DG is quite entry level and itsnt anything to jump up and down about... extra couple of buck and you can get the DS, which reads much better in the reviews

Will let you know later but the one for about R800 is 7.1 and has Dolby which is a big factor in sound quality.

You don't need one with a headphone amp unless you're using good quality headphones with an impedance that requires amplification.
