Got a surprise call from Vodacom..I won a prize?

I just received a call from vodacom (hopefully since they knew all my details)
saying I won a voucher (to some place I've)and a phone (Nothing fancy).

A little skeptical at first.. but the last time I got a call from someone saying I won something, I actually did. So I was grateful and said many confusing thank you's this time :)

Uhm, Now I am just trying to figure out why. Must be a marketing thing since not many people let down prizes they won :/

Nuntheless, I just got an sms saying from an 08200700XX (doesnt look like a company number?) number:
"A Vetting application for a new line has been registered against your Account: XXXXXXXX. Please contact Customer Acquistion on 0821941 for any queries. VODACOM"

Does this look dodge? In the event that the new cell phone (If there is any) gets lost and someone rings up a huge bill, I'm guessing I would have to foot the bill for it right?

Could be quite nasty considering the price of data these days. Any folks out there come across dealings like this? Just these days one has to be cautious.
 
Haha, you won a new contract :)

Now you must just pay it. It is like the Cell C "free phone" scam, you must just buy the airtime. FFS.

This is how it went:
Them: "Since you have been such a loyal subscriber (for 4 months LOL) you have WON a voucher and cell phone (They read out the model number)"
Me: *Confused look*
Them: "Are these your details" (They read out and confirmed all my details, i.e. all the details I gave Vodacom)
Me: "YAY, I won something" (Worried Look)

In short, No I didnt enter any competitions, at least not vodacom.
 
Oh don't listen to these guys, they're just being pessimistic. I'm sure the prince of Nigeria actually did enter you into a competition without your knowing, and now you won. They'll probably just need your ID number and credit card details and so on.

Oh, and you might need to make a small payment to help him buy his sister a wheelchair. Or something.

So you've just given someone you don't know from Adam personal confirmation that all the details they have for you are 100% correct? Nah, I'm sure it's nothing to worry about... :erm:

I'd be more than a little concerned. Call me a pessimist, but this sounds dodge.
 
Did you contact customer acquisition on that number provided?

Sounds very dodge boet.... :/

Just contacted them now..
Me: "What happens in the event this package never arrives at my door, and someone else activates it.. Would I be charged for it?"
Them: "They need your ID to activate, without that they cant"

This is going to be interesting..This sounds dodge indeed. But it sounds like what Pilgrim had to say.. i.e. They ship you a new phone, then hook you into the airtime.

The "You won a prize" was actually meant to be "Would you like
to sign up for a contract".

Hows these tactics! Didnt mention any fees whatso ever on the call, just said "Prize" it is being shipped now.

Wasted time! *Cries* Is a lame nokia 5130.

You have to be so blunt with telemarketers, "I dont want a contract, BYE".

Unfortunately I cant just ignore all 'Private Numbers'..

Darn database sharing again, i.e. It was Hallmark trying to actually sell the contract as far as I know ?

Tell them you dont want it, and that they can pick it up at their leisure. Then tell them you will charge them storage at a rate of R1000 a day, which does not include insurance.
 
Everybody uses Vodacom and MTN's name. They are private companies who are selling contracts, same as any vodashop or voda4u.
Someone called home 2 weeks ago and claimed that I won a prize from cape town to be delivered to me. He had all my personal details and claimed his calling from someone affiliated to MTN (even tho I a
Am a vodacom subscriber and dealer). He said my number had been selected and was calling me by my surname, called my name about 20 times during the 4 minute call. He wanted to know how much airtime I use every month, I told him its none of his business and he dropped the phone, idiot.
