That's right, they bought out the 15% owned by the Rupert family trust (through Venfin) and upped their stake in Vodacom from 35% to 50% - same as Telkom's

I think with Vodacom slowly introducing Vodafone's products and services on their network over the last year this would have been a given?

BTW Vodafone live is a service that Vodafone offer, not the company itself :)

I don't the think the actual deal or transfer has taken place yet. It's stil being negotiated as far as i know.

Correct me if i'm wrong please :)

What might actually happen.....

Vodafone is actually taking over Venfin and its 15% stake in Vodacom - the rest being hived off into a private company.

I think Vodafone intends to use this stake for a BEE deal which in turn will give it a substantial shareholding in Telkom.

In that process Vodafone will sell its 50% shareholding in Vodacom for a 35% or more shareholding in a combined Telkom / Vodacom group.

Vodafone in talks to increase Vodacom stake

LONDON - UK-based mobile phone company Vodafone has entered exclusive talks to raise its stake in Vodacom by paying up to R16bn for an additional 15% interest.

Vodafone said today the talks are being held with the Rembrandt Trust, which controls the unlisted ’B’ ordinary shares in VenFin, an investment holding company listed on the JSE. Vodafone said it intends to acquire the VenFin shares in the market today at up to R47,25 per share.

The move would increase Vodafone’s effective shareholding in Vodacom, which is 50% owned by Telkom, from 35% to 50%.

Vodafone said the increased stake would give it more exposure to the growing South African market.

The company said the acquisition would have no impact on its share buyback programme or credit ratings.

The transaction requires regulatory approval and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2006, Vodafone said.

Very interesting (and eminently possible!) analysis!

Okay, here is a speculative scenario for mid 2007 perhaps?

With WiMAX, the convergence bill, fixed-mobile integration, deregulation etc., Telkom is positioning itself to be everything to everybody. I believe Telkom are smarter than any of the other operators when it comes to scheming.

It wont be long until Telkom actually starts competing with the likes of Vodacom in the the mobile space. Just before they are ready to take on the wireless and mobile subscriber bases of existing operators, they will sell out of the mobile operators (for tens of billions of Rand) and then proceed to 'rob' them of their subscribers.
