French telecommunications equipment developer Alcatel is hoping local telecoms operators will snap up a prototype solution for television it says will epitomise the concept of convergence.

The interactive solution, which it calls the ‘triple play’, will enable integrated television, voice and video calling, instant messaging and the creation and sharing of own content like home videos, among other functions, all using a single device, the television.

Deputy CEO of Alcatel South Africa Limdumfana (Linda) Khumalo says the take-up of its triple play offering in other countries has been roughly 10% to 20% of broadband subscribers, but admits this will take some time in South Africa: “You need the aggressive roll-out of broadband services first.”
