Is it illegal to land another fibre cable in South Africa???

If it isn't yet you can be sure Telkom / DoC will make it as soon as you breath your intentions :(

Yep atm telkom got the only landrights for fibre in SA.

I think this is the reason why IS went Satellite and not fibre, easier roll-out.
 
Mmmm, maybe I should start a revolutionary anti-telkom terrorist group called "Black November", for liberation of the oppressed internetless masses (and those even more oppressed ones that have internet already) of this great country, so they can rise above their squaller, and make SA the greatest nation of the face of this planet...

Oh crap, I think that is the NIA knocking on my door....

The only thing stopping me from joining you is a common disorder i suffer from known as BUBBA-PHOBIA. ;) :D .

Although, i have been fliiping through my most recently aquired version of a certain cookbookyou might know of and the appeal of engaging in some bold consumer rights statements, is growing on me by the day. :mad: :cool:

as far as i can see it is the usual answer - not until the minister says so .... although the sharing of the existing SAT3 doodah is a different issue and one which ICASA has been making noise about for some time

as far as i can see the sno's licence should allow it to land fibre

/lol @ e-NIA....sure they would be happy to know that the DoC are intent on dragging them out of the industrial age *snort*
 
Black November!! I laughed soo hard!

Seriousley tho we might wana do that, everyone pool money and we start a underground intenet link with wireless connections and such.

I'm near the coast and know a bunch of perlemoensmokkies, we can get them to drop some cable - LOL
 
How about draggind a fiber from Angola to here, over land, so it's not exactly "landing" anywhere along the coast. I think a piece of dark fiber would do nicely to "lighten" our burdon :)

You know on this piont I'd just like to state again.. other countries (eg. sweden, japan, noway, germany) have 1gbit home user connections! We here in southafrica have isp "boasting" abt their proposed new plans to increase their TOTAL international bandwidth to 1gbit... am I the only one that thinks its totally hilarious?? Why cant this goverment see whats goin on abroad and learn!!

This is me officaily saying SA Govmnt seems to only care abt themselves and the "poor innocent oppressed(after 10 years of freedom) public" and couldnt care less abt ANY progress in this country whatsoever!
 
Here are my thoughts: at the moment Telkom is completely underselling their bandwith, but in reality if South Africa were to have speeds that are actually to be considered broadband ie those found in other countries and the idiotic cap were removed (or at least raised to something sensible, say 50 or 100 gig), and penetration increased then I think the current cables would be terribly insufficient.

The problem is only Telkom can land a cable and they dont foresee the shortage because "3gig should be enough for anyone" and so when we're finally in a position to have real internet (when the sector is properly regulated/ Ivy chokes on a doughnut/ telkom management find religion) we will have to play catch up and wait up to years for enough bandwith to have the same sort of experience the rest of the world enjoys.

Not good.
