Hey...I need to make use of my old modem to receive faxes, plus I have the ADSL line and a normal phone line. What is the best way to connect these all to one phone point - I have only seen the double splitters...

Sorry about the simple question, but know this is the place qhere I will get the quickest response.

Thanks

I think the quickest, cheapest way would be to use the double spliter connected to your filter. Otherwise getting Telkom to come put in an extension will take forever. You can do it yourself of course :D

Duh - yes, of course - that would work fine. No problem having two devices on one filter?

Hmmm I never though of that.. But there is no logical reason I can think of that would make it any different. I"m sure telkom will tell you to put the splitter in first and then use two filters.. But I'm sure thats just to make money. I'll see what I can find out

I can plug my phone into my modem, and then setup the modem to pick up after x amount rings. This way you won't extentions, unless you don't want your phone to be standing close to your modem.

Some ISP's say one filter per phone. Others say one filter per "extension". A few none ISP pages I found had this:

Tips:

  • All phones or other equipment must pass through a filter.
  • Make sure that the ADSL signal is only passing through one Filter / Splitter.
  • It can be the same Filter / Splitter for all of the phones.

I would give it a try with filter then spliter, If you lose conn then get a another filter. But I'm almost 90% certain it should work.. almost :)

EDIT Found another link with the same info above with good diagrams and stating that it WILL work with one filter http://usertools.plus.net/tutorials/id/13

Thanks Kalvaer. Who says you can't get help on basic stuff on these forums? hehe :D

I have made a diagram of what I need and it doesn't seem to work out. Let me explain:

Single telephone socket on wall
Extension from there to another room.
Plugged into the end of the extension will be the filter
Plugged into the filter will be the double splitter
Phone line and fax modem plugged into splitter

Where does my ADSL line go then? Need to have another double splitter plugged into the end of the extension surely? That will be in keeping to the "rule" of the ADSL signal passing through just the one splitter.

How does that sound...

What you have to remember is that your ADSL line must NOT go through the filter! I got that from a british site and their filters and spilters are almost the same thing. You buy one "box" and it has the filter and spliter in one.

My incoming line from telkom is a double socket. So my ADSL goes to the one, and my filter to the other if your socket is a single you will need two spliters.

Lets see if I can get this right:
Code:
   ---------------          -------     |----> ADSL Router.
/ Telkom Socket / ---> / Spliter / -->
 ---------------          -------       |----> Extenstion ---|
                                                           __|___
                                                         / Filter /
                                                         --------
                                                           __|___
                                                          /Spliter/
                                                          -------
                                                      ------|------
                                                 ___|__       ____|______
                                                / Phone/    / Modem/Fax /
                                                -------     -------------

edit Forgot the filter :)

Hmmm arrggg.. That could also be wrong if your phone and modem and you ADSL are in the same place :confused: Then the one spliter would be inbetween your filter and the extension.

This might get harder than I first thought.

Just remember.
ADSL=NO filter.

1 Filter= Many phones/faxes using "spliters" to add more (all will have same number ,same line, cant use more than one at once)

I gathered that their splitters and filters were combined. Your diagram is close to what I need, except that I want to put the first splitter at the end of the extension (which comes straight from the socket) - pretty much the same thing, right? Otherwise I need to run a second extension for the ADSL line.

EDIT: Just seen your last post. Yes, they are all in the same place, so putting the extension before the first splitter should work. ADSL line will not go through the filter.

Thats what I thought when I realised you said you had an extension to the phone and modem... and generally the Modem has to be close to your computer :D

Okay - here's another one to think about.

If, after the filter, I have one cable to my modem. Then I follow what Nod mentioned and plug the phone cable into the modem (the phone works fine this way - I checked), has this then been filtered? I would assume so, as I imagine that the modem card has now acted as the splitter really.

Correct.

Think about "tracing" the signal backwards.

Its going to go from your phone to the modem.. but now you are not sure what happens in the modem,... BUT from there, in order to get to the telkom socket.. it still has to go to the cable that is in the filter to your modem. So it has to be filtered.

With that you would only need the extension, one spliter and one filter. Which is the cheapest (if not free since you have that all already)

That's exactly the way I saw it. I do have all three already. Now if I can just find one of those guys in the white vans in my area, I will make him plug me in!!

Thanks for the help with the the thought processes here. Hope it kept your mind off the withdrawal symptoms for a while! Good luck with that by the way. Once colleague here manages to take his family on really nice holidays since quitting and putting the same amount of money spent on smokes into a separate account each month. And just to keep you motivated - another colleague ignored the warnings to stop smoking until they had to amputate his leg! :eek:

Have a good weekend - no cheating!

I'm going to put all the money away and buy Vodka. So next year I can actually try to give up Alcohol :D.

Jokes aside, this weekend is going to be tough.. but I'm going to try.. and thanks for the support
