70 percent of global telephony will be wireless by 2009

As a result of falling mobile costs and entry into the markets of countries such as India and China, traditional Western telephone companies will face a difficult future, as a third of the population of the US and Europe is expected to use wireless and broadband telephony instead of the the fixed land-line phones by 2009.
This trend has been predicted by market research group Gartner, which says that wireless is the technology of the future as it is cheaper than fixed-line calls.
The research shows that though for now, the traditional fixed-line seems to be popular, in a few years it will lose out to wireless telephony.
David Neil, research vice president at Gartner said that the exising telephone companies have to integrate wireless into their agenda if they wish to survive in the future.
"They will have to have a very clear wireless strategy or they are going to be dead," BBC quoted him, as saying.
The group also predicted that by 2010, there would be three billion mobile subscribers in the world. (ANI)
