Good ! Hope it will jarr Telkom in their boots, and wake them up. Concerning ISP's, if they did not deliver as the case is here proven, who needs them then for what? let them suffer until they do the same. Bypass telkom and liberise the telecoms without telkom in the equation!
 
Its a great story. Wonder what would happen if JHB went this way, reckon it would force a few cuts in the 'Beemer' fleet at our 'Download Life' company lol.
 
According to Dave Jarvis, from UniNet, self-provisioning is a non-issue which is why UniNet provide a framework which independent ISP’s can use to lock into their system.

The word 'ISP's should be replaced with anybody, no Vans, no permission
We can do what we want, cut through roads, plant our own telephone poles etc... :)
 
Since when is it legal to run a MAN using WIFI let alone having a licence?

This is weird....

I have an interesting story to tell about "cut through the roads" The original law on prohibiting broadcasting over a public road was instituted by the old government to try and curb data and voice transmissions from the so called "enemy" back then. In 1998 I had to setup a 2mb Microwave link from a council building to the fire department of the council. I can not describe the pain of getting the permission to do this. It was finally passed by Mr. Mandela himself. signed off by a General in the Military and only because the council donated R 2 000 000,00 to the Nelson Mandela Children's fund.

Then after the install I had to setup links to Vosloorus, which got stolen all the time  The whole process took months and @ one stage I had about 40 Telkom Technicians numbers on my Cell. Anyhow after the install we had a line of sight issue with some trees in the way. I applied to the council to have 5 trees removed. The fire department instead chopped down the entire "forest" resulting in a lawsuit that took months to conclude....

What a period in my life and what an experience to learn about these laws and why they were enforced.....

I'm still awaiting that google video link.

Interesting that they decided to go with the 2.4GHz range. They could start running into problems in a couple of year time... but i guess Knysna is not that hugh. I just hope they don't start mucking up the spectrum for everyone else.
I'm sure they have thought of that.

I'm starting to think that I am missing some info here. I tend to do that not read properly then ask stupid questions.

So let me get this right..... They have just finished installing 2.4GHz stuff.
They are now looking at changing it to 5.8GHz?

I'm sure they have thought this out. maybe putting in the 2.4 for "last mile" and then going to put backbone on 5.8

Did a kismet scan 2 months ago in Knysna and the 2.4Ghz is saturated
SSID: knysna, knysna1 etc etc. Will get an update in the few weeks when I go their again.

Picked up 6 Uninetworks SSID (running MikroTik 2.9.6 on 5.8 Ghz band - Backbone?)
for Knysna Muni in the small dorp of Sedgefield and as Skydog said last mile 2.4Ghz

Telkom don't ever,ever bluff. You had better do something- whatever that
might be. Everybody is waiting in anticipation, so get on with it. The writing is
on the wall Telkom. If you can't stop Uninet from setting up their very own
5.8ghz telephone exchange then how will you stop me from setting up my
fixed wired exchange?
 
Mossel Bay municipality is running MikroTik Wireless kit
Officials have been working wirelessly from home for 2 months ago.
Knysna very much more in the news compared to other Muni.
No plans yet for Internet connectivity and VoIP where Knysna
is moving ahead there

Anyone from Knysna or Mossel Bay feel like posting what it costs them?

Ie. Connection fee?
Voice calls, per second/minute to Telkom and Mobile numbers?

From what I gather they basically connect to IS?

It's all about having the right public relations people to get you in the media and getting their clients name out there.
I think there are many wireless project out there that we dont know of.

I think well done to all those people/companies out there that are not just sitting on their butts and complaining about Telkom but are really doing something about it. eg building own infrustructure.

but building commercial networks on the 2.4GHz spectrum I start to worry a bit.
I just believe that everyone that is using the 2.4 specturm must do it responsably.
