the other post got me thinking what is left for us to do at broad band quality with a 3bg hard cap
buy this i mean fully broad band like one would do with no cap at all !

email ? only if you restrict the size of attcments and disable html emails
web ? only realy viable if you use a text browser
irc ? ok this is still viable if you don't use dcc much

that is about it that i would think one could do for a hole month with a 3gb caped adsl, while keeping ones useage daily and "heavy"

I downloaded a file last night, and instead of 90mb, bittorrent downloaded 300mb...dont ask me how... so now I cant do anything online for a few days and feel horrible even sending the few characters in this post.

You have to remember that bittorrent drops "bad packets"...so it can effectively download more than the actual file size.

The other obvious thing is that as you download, you're turned into a peer.
Other people download bits of the file from you as well.

The end result? Bittorrent + Telkom ADSL = Capped in 2 days.

Damn. That's upset me so much I think I'm going to get sloshed tonight.

In reality? Look, ADSL sucks. Capping sucks. But if all you're doing is surfing the web, sending email and IRC, you'll be hard-pressed to breach the cap. I play World of Warcraft a LOT. Probably about 20 hours a week. I also surf the web constantly while flying or running or waiting in WoW. I think my utilisation is above average, where the average is your garden-variety home-user with a PC bought from Game or Dions. I do about 1.5 to 1.8 Gb a month. I've actually now dropped my sub from a shaped 3Gb account to an unhaped 2Gb account, just because I get better latency in WoW at more or less the same price and I don't really use that last Gig anyway.

But yes, whatever I'm paying is still too damn much. The fact that I have to consciously self-manage my utilisation sucks. The fact that I pay more for unshaped: sucks.

Sadly, for the MASSES of average people out there, 3Gb is enough.

That's not quite true... I regularly browse about 1.4GB and use about 250MB with email a month on my 56k.

If I had the option listening to streaming radio and downloading freely available, and paid content using HTTP (ie. off the web) I'm guessing my browsing (ie. HTTP) bandwidth would go up to about 25GB a month. I'd also like to start playing some games online, so add another 5GB for that.

So I'm sticking to 56k, it's much more versatile and cheaper than ADSL at the moment. :D I'd be willing to pay at the most R500 for 192k ADSL and 30GB of international, unshaped bandwidth.

one could always get in touch with life? or social life? Or then again, can ADSL and get ISDN? Its probably cheaper too?

Actually I think 3gb is really enough for doing alot of browsing, mail and some software/music downloads, I've got 3gig on Iburst (1mb) and if i didn't download the music and vids off p2p I'd be rather hard pressed to get capped.
I mean as Kropotkin said he uses 1.4 gigs, thats alot and then he's still got 1.6 left. But it is useless for using broadband for what it was made for. ISND and dialup are almost fine for surfing, you dont need a super speedy 1024kb connection to do that, so why should people think of cap as just for surfing and e-mail, which is how Telkom obviously thinks of it.

If they thinking broadband is just for surfing then i don't know why the heck they bothering with speeds higher than 192k.. i mean after a point browsing can't get any faster. 192k is decent, 384-512k i think is fast enough for most browsing and email content(flash etc) .

I used to be on ISDN, but it's actualy got to a point where ADSL 192 with a basic package worked out cheaper and I could no longer say no to ADSL. And unfortunately, now I can't go back because as far as I know, Telkom no longer offer InfinitCall on new accounts.

force teklom to implement compression on the transmissions ?

you have the ability to force telkom into doing something for our good ?
why did you not say something bofore ? pls get on it and do something about the cap while you at it ?

It's sad how we discuss what you could do with the 3Gb cap. We all saying its good enough for browsing and email. We are paying +-R500 a month just to read free articles and chat to friends. It really sad. This is not what broadband was ment to be. :(

my point exacly, i am not paying 800 zar pm to surf the web, and when i do i dont experance its fullness because of this ****ing cap !
well put them on dial up or even better take part of there cap away and give it to the ones that use adsl how it was ment to be used !!!

People Telkom is a charitible organisation... it is saving worldwide bandwith through it's policies....think of those poor people in somalia whom can now surf at broadband speeds...

Thank you Telkom for doing your part for the less fortunate!!!!!

Probably about 20 hours a week

Lol? Thats hardly a LOT of wow. A friend of mine plays about 6 hours a day when he's not at lectures/studying/gf/roleplaying etc. That's on weekdays. On weekends if he's got nothing better to do he can play Wow for almost up to 8 hours (with breaks of course) so lets just say 6 x 5 + 8 = 38 hours a week. Thats more like average amount of gameplay for ure average Wow player on ADSL.

I am on isdn and thats a ripoff but as much as it is I cant help but feel the transition to ADSL would be even more so! Lol at my uncapped ISDN...sorry, just felt like making my crappy connection seem a little bit better

38 hours is a sh1tload more than I could ever devote to a game weekly. Maybe I should be glad that the Telkom does not allow us to play these "internet" game things. Yes, the Telkom always knows what is best. Can't wait for 56k ADSL to be released, so I can enjoy the ADSL benfits of a cap and pay extortionate fees.

Shame, poor oke's gf must be bored at night :p .
