Telkom broadband prices soar - on News24

But nowhere do I see ICASA or the DOC commenting on the 1st November abortion...
 
i dont want to register to see the comments, but what is that one guy saying? "This is SO not true!!!" What is he referring to?

Telkom are not the ONLY provider of fixed line broadband internet. They are the only providers of the physical lines. Other ISPs are able to sell the internet access and do not HAVE to resell Telkom/SAIX accounts. We (Obsidian Online) for example resell Internet Solutions accounts. These are completely different to Telkom/SAIX accounts and do not cost ANY more since Telkoms pricing was changed. Perhaps you should get your facts straight before you write articles about things you dont understand.

Could someone then ask him why their prices are so ridiculously over priced in comparison to their international counterparts. I assume his answer there would be along the lines of "It is Telkom's fault......"

He is not helping matters is he?
 
Thank you for posting the comment. And it is exactly what i feared it would be. Where is this obsidian and how can we go bonk this guy over the head?
 
The figures being quoted are the difference between ISPs offering 30GB packages and the same ISPs now being restricted to 3GB packages.
While pricing is way too high and hard-capping is evil, the article is misrepresenting facts. The vast majority of users do not use more than 3GB / month and they will have no proce increase at all. What is happening is that Telkom are cracking down on a hole in their billing methodology like any business would do.
Maybe the pressure will get Telkom to cut the /GB price, which is what we all want.
I am still astounded that even with all the price cuts in line rental from Telkom we have not seen a single price cut in the SAIX cost, in fact the /GB billing method means that SAIX are forcing all its member ISPs to duplicate the TelkomInternet model leaving no room for differtiation in the market.
 
Actually, WilliRob, IS sells bandwidth, not ADSL. Telkom owns ALL "ADSL" infrastructure, and diginet etc as well, as well as dictating wholesale prices.

If IS is independant, why are their products virtually identical to SAIX in price (bar local)?

these kind of articles should have been published way before this new pricing was implemented. This after-the-facts reporting is not going to help in stopping telkom getting away with things.

I hear that statement being thrown around a lot and have to wonder about its vaildity.

Is it only true because at the time it was first made there were only 3gb accounts available? Therefore everyone stayed below the 3gb threshold because they had little choice. If they then purchased another account as recommended by telkom it would reflect as another user again staying below 3gb.

Then I also have to wonder, again assuming it is true, why cap at all??

It is typical, unfortunately, of the way most consumers and the like react. It is called the blinkered approach - it has to be directly in front of you before you react to it. By that time it is virtually impposible to change what has or is going to happen.

I have a problem with that statement. It only tells me that the vast majority of ADSL users do not use Broadband properly and/or are afraid of reaching their cap. A 3GB cap is just plain not reasonable for a broadband connection.
 
The whole 'the vast majority dont use 3 gigs' argument is stale and skewed to suite Telkoms needs.
I use below 3 gigs on an account, but I have more than one. My actual requirment is closer to 10-20 a month.


I wonder what would happen to the economy of America or the UK if you suddenly had to cap all broadband offerings to 3 gigs and charge comparitive rates.
