So let me just explain the situation. The flat I'm renting has a telephone line in it, but it's been disconnected for several years (before I moved in) and the owner doesn't have any details for the line.
So I called Telkom and ordered a 384k line and the woman tells me that because the line that's in the flat is no longer connected a techie has to come put a new line in which means I don't get the option for self install.
I was under the impression that self install was setting up your modem etc after your line was activated?
Perhaps the Telkom Rep can clarify?

Actually you need the telephone line installed first, then once its installed opt for the self install ADSL. I had to do this as the existing line was a prepaid from the previous tennent and it was disconnected too (also paintes ripped out all the wiring).
This option means it takes 2 weeks longer but at least you save a packet. Also opt for a Closer Plan as you do not pay for installtion, costs an extra R17 bucks (or something like that) per month.

So I should really be asking for the phone line first and then the adsl line once the phone line is installed?

YES, also take this advice to heart. Its much better!
opt for a Closer Plan as you do not pay for installtion, costs an extra R17 bucks
Step 1: Apply for telephone line, choose option of Closer Plan (No ADSL and No ISP) and get free installation of line
Step 2: Once line is installed Apply for ADSL self install option. (My Telkom office did both forms at the same time and only enabled the ADSL request when the line job was complete).
Step 3: Do self Install of ADSL and use Telkom Guest account to test it
Step 4: Get ISP of choice, install logon details in modem
Step 5: Your are done and deserve a beer.
