Oh oh, is that competition i smell telkom? Just shows you how much SA is being ripped off by telkom's leased lines (nevermind every single other telkom product!) :mad:
 
One does have the feeling of floodgates having been opened by the new legislation. Telkom just seem to continually be putting out fires and having to deal with announcements like these every couple of weeks
 
So what have telkoms response been so far to these municipal networks that have been springing up lately?

Cant be anything positive.. I mean comon, theyre loosing out on diginet income. WOOT!

And when theyre down, kick em again!!
 
What will be an interesting development is if and when the CoJ makes access available as a municipal service to residents, similar to garbage collection, electricity, etc. Be all that as it may, YOU GO, CoJ!!!
 
If only Durban would pull the surfboard from their @R$$E$ and get going on something like that!... :D Anybody know more ?
 
I personally chatted with some of the technical management in the Durban Electricity about 18 months ago about the possibilities of municipal broadband. Durban electricity, along with the Durban Metro traffic department, own and run a substantial fibre network around the greater Durban area.
And much of the fibre is "dark", its unused and ripe for providing a metro backbone.
Both Durban and Cape Town have been watching Tswane closely to see how ICASA reacts. Now that muni networks are becoming legal, I suspect the next few years will see far more municipal/private broadband partnerships.

International and national bandwidth will remain an issue though - with only 1.5 providers (0.5 = SNO) that bandwidth will still be pricy methinks.
 
I would be nice if the cost saving was passed onto residents. I'm sure were subsidising the high costs of communication, so it would only be fair for the manucipality not to keep the profits for themselves, but to uplift and improve services. Stuff Telkom, their time is past. If I were Papi I'd concentrate my efforts on realignment and refocussing on how to turn Telkom around, make it customer friendly, instead of fire-fighting and legal battles.

I saw Durban Muni. put out a tender for wireless to connect all the different building. Looks like it's going ahead in Durban. Just wish the end user could get a piece of the bandwidth action. even it is just local.

Start seeing ROI in just over 3 months... Setup paid off with the cost saving in 3 months... there we have it... Now they can use the money and TIME saved to focus on their customers and services... better life for all just by cutting out <drumroll> Telkom... funny that... they are so fcking blind and ignorant... but hey, Telkom is not complaining 'bout their 35% increase in earnings. makes me sick... and the above is a classic example of how much easier life would be if Telkom had it's customers in mind... burn telkom burn... :mad:
