Hi guys I am buying a new gfx card at the end of the month and cannot decide between these two cards.

Can someone in the know please direct me to the better choice and maybe back it up with some facts.

I have googled for a clear answer ,but opinions differ wildly.

If any dealer could maybe pm me some prices I would appreciate it greatly.

peace

Geforce 6800GT

- SM 3.0
- Greater overclocking potential

X800XL

- Greater stock speeds
- VIVO
- Cheaper [might be the same price now, but when it came out it was $100 cheaper]

Most review websites chose the X800XL over the Geforce 6800GT [Anandtech, HardOCP, Xbitlabs] etc so that's what I'd go for.

Best choice would be the 6800GS if you can find it that is. It has the same performance as the 6800GT but for around R1600. Just go to Xbitlabs or Anandtech and check out the review.

Maybe a dealer can tell us when it will be available for purchase.

Buying a 6800GT or X800XL would be stupid because the 6800GS performs just as well for much less.

[EDIT] here is the review from Xbit http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/geforce-6800gs.html

This is the most supid Question i have eva seen asked here, its like asking what is better This sign [§] or this [§] one. I mean really its up to you, they are = in almost every way. ONe might be better at doing this where as the other is better at doing that... Come on really just make up your own mind.

Here are some tips:

If you have an N-Force board dont be an ass and buy and ATi card when they are made for Nvidia.
Same goes for an ATi board.
Dont ask stupid Questions like this again....

Hmmm person, unless you missed some :) and ;) in your previous post, it could be seen as a typical rude salesman (god-in-his-own-eyes) response. If that was me you were replying to, I probably would've told you where to stick your comments and the bussiness you're conducting on this site.

Sorry, ;)

I understand that they want to know whats best but really its up to them to make up their own mind... I might think something is better just because i tend to like those type of things - does not mean some1 else has to like it. when picking something, i fell its best that the person does it themself. If they do not like it then its thier own fault no-one elses. Picking Graphics cards is it same - unless you pick it and you like it, you'll never be happy.

My advice is just pick one that you think you might like; if you cant make up your mind just flip a coin. Both cards do the same thing and get the same points give and take a few.

That sounds much better and I bet it wasn't difficult either. Now don't go and make stupid comments like that again :D

No such thing as a stupid question, there is only a stupid answer. Think about it.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I made up my mind. In hindsight maybe it was a stupid question to ask:D

No, there aren't any stupid questions.
If you're asking the question, it's because you don't know the answer.

Unfortunately there are obnoxious *****wits in this world who think they know everything, and incorrectly assume that other people (or persons) know everything too.

People (or persons) like that usually have a problem because their sphincter muscle is squeezing their neck a bit too hard.

does an nforce motherboard really work better with nvidia gpu's? odd i think, since most hardware sites recommend getting an nforce4 board in conjunction with any GPU.

Nforce made by Nvidia- now why would it work better with an ATi card may I ask ? Its like using news paper instead of toilet paper - it works but just not as well.

is this your logic is there some proof of this?

cause everybody i know at our regular LANs use nforce (2,3,4) mobos and its an even split between nvidia and ati. so how come ati performs so well on nforce mobos?

as i see it, a motherboard is just your platform. the better the platform the better the potential performance of your components and system. true or false?

You'll look pretty silly paging thru the toilet roll, trying to read it. Toilet rolls are for a niche market, whereas newspaper is an excellent allrounder :)

Just ignore Person, he has been wrong many times before so if I dont know for sure or if I cant find a link to prove him right I assume he is wrong.

About the Nvidia & ATI mobos well in theory Nvidia cards should be faster on Nvidia boards but if they do that they would be shooting themselves in the foot.

I am pretty sure that an ATI would work just fine on an Nforce board and an Nvidia card would work on a ATI board. I dont have any links about this and I am too lazy to go and look right now but based on Person's statements in the past I will assume he is wrong again.

exactly my thoughts.

i own a nForce4 MSI board with an x850xt pe. and my benchmarks are spot on in comparison to anandtech and tomshardware. soooo, does this mean it would be even better with an ATI board?!?!?!? yeah right.

some informed advice from an uninformed source :( i fear that person could be dangerous.

Yep he is, the problem is he gives people advice that is wrong and they take it, here on the forums we can correct him but he has a business where poor sods go and take his advice. I fear Mr. Gibello is a dangerous man.

hahaha, so according to "the logic or person" (book to be released shortly) a 6800GT will perform worse on ANY other chipset than an nforce chipset?

what about k8t800, k8t890 (for the AMD's) and the pm800, pt880? kind of weird i think. how about intel chipset motherboards then?

Person

You will find that a Nvidia card performs a bit better on an Nforce board than it does on any other board with a different Chipset. Take the same card test it on an Nforce baord and an VIA board and it will perform a bit better on the Nforce. Now take the ATi card and the same boards. ATi performs better on the VIA chipset.

When I get back i'll do the tests and post the scores.

odd

here we have some benches of some of the more popular chipsets
http://www.amdzone.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=84&page=6

the cards used are all ATI. please note that the graphics performance is much better on the nforce and k8t890 chipsets than the ATI chipsets.

guess that theory doesnt hold much water. :p

err, question?

NFORCE for the win! i love their chipsets and have seen some nice performance. VIA have good stuff in the k8t8xx stuff, but that will be an experiment for next time when i have a bunch of money just lying around :p
