See Telkom are looking to spend their ill gotten gains

This would certainly be a smart move as their margins in their traditional business areas come under more and more pressure.
Out with the old and in with the new, but if telkom has anything to do with it, it will be a rip off in the end, be sure.

But doesn't it grate you that they have fattened their balance sheet out of our pockets.
I would agree that the move is smart if one really felt that Telkom Management needed to do deals like this as a deregulated telcom market was coming at them like an express train.

It grates me to no end, everything that is Telkom grates me.

Its a smart move cause they control the telecommunications market in SA, not the government. Telkom dictate the cost of everything. Just look at 1 Nov as an example.
SLOWLY though they are going to be forced to reduce the costs of telephony and internet access and in the mean time they position themselves in a market that will flourish in an enviroment where these services are affordable.

It might take a decade or 2 for these reforms to happen if the DoC's track record is anything to go by, but by then Telkom will be in a great position.
As they reduce the costs on one side of the business they reap the rewards with the new and then some.

Have you considered this.
With their monopolistic strangle hold on telecommunications and their obsene profits, they can buy into other parts of the SA IT economy like BCX, then subsidise aggressive pricing to drive other IT competitors under.
They could then pick up these companies and reduce prices etc etc....
It's a scary senario.
That's why the USA government broke up Standard Oil years ago and more recently AT&T. The actions of these companies were detrimental to the economic prosperity of the US, so Congress voted laws to break them up.
That's the only chance we have

I don't think it will be as easy here is SA because the gov owns a large amout of shares in telkom.The us gov don't have shares in the companies - or do they? They also have a gov that can think and see what will happen if the companies becomes like telkom.

I think it was Antowan that said the whole company should be broken up into tiny little pieces and forced to compete with itself.
That would be the first prize but that would be way to radical a change for our government.
They cant even seem to get to grips with other reforms that have been suggested by the industry, the consumers and technical experts from around the globe.
Our governments inaction is scary, Telkom is just left to run riot.
