Prototype of $100 laptop for poor unveiled

This is great! This would probably help poor county's close the gap on the richer country's faster.
Now, if they could only make a plan to get cheap broadband to the poor....

The next step :

They going to provide free internet to the poor.
Telkom watch out !

Still not convinced about their decision to pass up free copies of OS X.

Nice. Now after import taxes and duties, importer margin, wholesale profits we might see it at R.200 pm (or 20% of the average worker in SA's income) for 24 months, bundled with a telephone line and 60 minutes free internet from Telkom.

Now, it may seem like a bargain (R80 for the line hire, R60 for the laptop and about R60 for 10 hours of internet), and, in terms of Telkom pricing it is, but, as the average income is less than a R1000 per family in SA, who will be able to afford it ?

I think it was the right decision. If they'd gone with OS X they would've been locked into Apple and when it came time for upgrades, support and additional products the poorer nations wouldn't be able afford it. Free and Open Source is the way to go for developing nations.

Btw, I defintely want to get my hands on one of these at some point. Dig the ebook reader photo!
