IE9 download issue with Vista

I have an old laptop with Vista, and never bothered to upgrade it with Service Packs 1 & 2.
In order to d/load IE9, Windows requires me to first d/load these Service Packs. SP1 is about 435Mb, and I presume SP2 about the same.

Is this figure accurate? .. sometimes, MS quote a figure & it turns out to be 1/3 or 1/4 of that, per d/load.

However, I'm more concerned with the time it'll take on a 384 connection - estimated time started off at 17 hrs., but that should come down (drastically?) once the system settles down.
Still time I don't want to waste on something I don't even want in the first place - more a case of a ''means to an end''.

Any of you have any ideas as to how to get around this (and not have to d/load SP's 1 & 2), so I can still d/load IE9 which is only about 20 megs ?

Or you can change to a difference browser and you won't need to do any of this, try Firefox or Google Chrome..

I can download about 800mb on my 384k in 7 hours, if that helps, as far as I know there is no way around it, upgrade or get left behind.

You should download the standalone service packs instead of downloading them from windows update cause then you will the ability to install them again if you ever need to without having to download them again.. put them on a CD or a different Pc in case you ever format.

I highly recommend you use a download manager when downloading these, if you have Firefox you can get a addon called Downthemall.

Thanks for all the info., especially how much data I can expect to use up (with the links you provided), and how much time it'll for 800 megs.

I very occasionally use Chrome, but don't mind using IE (whether V. 7 or 9) on the laptop. Haven't used Firefox in a few years, and don't think I'll go back to it ever.

Btw, I'm using IE9 on a PC (which I find remarkably similar to Chrome, compared to IE8), so won't be getting 'left behind' in that respect.

Will take your advice as well to use a Manager.
